Re: If the Les Paul Didn't Exist, Which Gibson Would You Play?
Maybe not in it's current form, but by the time it came out fender was making solid body guitars. Wasn't it also suppose to be meant to compete with the Strat? The Flying V was out before the SG. I think that the SG is Gibson's take on the futuristic look of the Strat back in the 50's and the electronics were on the V. I know Les Paul didn't want his name on it, but it is a great guitar.

Re: If the Les Paul Didn't Exist, Which Gibson Would You Play?
That's the story I heard. Funny thing is the first time I seen a SG in person, I laughed because it reminded me of the cheap teisco Guitars I use to see in my youth (thin body). The thin body made it look like a toy. Once I played around with them, I fell in love.

Re: If the Les Paul Didn't Exist, Which Gibson Would You Play?
That's easy , I'd have my first pick of a ES-356 (Korina,natural Quilt top) . I have 1 now and it's a great guitar . It will go with me, when I go .
I have a Firebird VII ,It's ok, a bit heavy, but great sounding neck pickup . A "V" i have, the 50th. Comm. GOTM , sweet guitar. |

Oh, I love my Lesters, but I never realized how much I loved SG's till I bought one. I owned my Les Paul's for 20 years before I got an SG.

Re: If the Les Paul Didn't Exist, Which Gibson Would You Play?
335.
As much as I try to love an SG, I just can't... They are too small and flimsy for me. Not saying they are bad instruments, but they are just too flimsy for me. I can play smaller guitars (Ernie Ball Music Man comes to mind) but the SG just isn't balanced right for me. I'm a big dude. 6'8 and pretty big as well (over 300lbs). And I have HUGE hands. I just don't click with the SG which is a shame as I love the tone of an SG and a couple of my favorite players play(ed) an SG. Angus Young and Eric Clapton come to mind. I love SG's to hear and to look at. But not to play. But what is funny is that my first guitar that I played my first chord on was a Gibson SG... That is THE guitar I learned on along with a 50 watt Marshall MG. Still have the guitar, the amp not so much. I have the SG set up with 11s in Open E tuning with high action for Slide stuff. But I just can't even dream of using one as a main guitar.335's on the other hand are the right size for me and have that fat thick tone I love so much. One of these days I will own a Gibson 335. Right now my modded Epiphone Dot (Seymour Duncan pickups) is having to fill the hollowbody shoes. It's a great guitar.

Re: If the Les Paul Didn't Exist, Which Gibson Would You Play?
This one... I picked this up in June. The ES-335 is an amazing guitar, with a huge voice, that does rock as well my Les Paul. In fact Charlie Daughtry calls his ES-345 "the burst killer". If you think ES-335/45/55s are just jazz guitars, you never played one.

Those old RDs are cool lookers. I've never cared for active electronics but the RIs have me drooling just a little, with their passive layouts.

I voted ES 175, but a cherry ES335 would be a very close runner up.

Re: If the Les Paul Didn't Exist, Which Gibson Would You Play?
However I did pick the ES series because of one awesome guitar. The ES-333 ! Those are damn awesome ! Anyone play one of those ? Like the fact that they have the back plate for the control cavity which is handy. However no Tom Delonge model please !

Re: If the Les Paul Didn't Exist, Which Gibson Would You Play?
After playing LPs for years I bought my first SG and Explorer within the last year. Now I like both of them more than my LPs.... so I'd probably have to vote for one of them.

Re: If the Les Paul Didn't Exist, Which Gibson Would You Play?
Playing my bros SG faded right now.
I'm in love. If they made more SGs with small guards I would've bought my own by now.
