SG Classic?
2 questions about my SG classic....
There are orange caps marked "233" between the vol and tone pots. Is that stock for 2004? If I wanted to, Could I get a standard pickguard and install humbuckers? Same pots and wiring? Thanks. |

Re: SG Classic?
the pickups routes on the Standard guard won't line up with the pickup routes in the body. You would have to get a custom pickguard, or get a Standard pickguard and reroute body, or you could modifiy the stock guard to fit humbuckers (thats what I did Reintroducing my SG "Classic")
You probably could use the same electronics, but personally I would recommend upgrading the pots to all 500k, and get a better cap too (even if you keep the P90s) I dont know about 2004, but my 2010 Classic has the same 233 caps |

Re: SG Classic?
Thanks guys.
The neck feels great and plays great. It's not leaving ever. Bummer about the routing, maybe I'll get an extra pickguard and mod one. I do change my own pickups and it's kind of fun. I'll keep it reversible. I'll look into the pots and caps when I get some more time. |

Re: SG Classic?
I love the neck on mine too, they are thinner than Standards/Specials, but not as slim as the 61. BTW when I looked into getting a custom guard made, I couldnt find anywhere that did it for a reasonable price (which is why I ended up modding the stock guard) if you look into it and find a good source, let me know please

Re: SG Classic?
SD make some stacked P90 humbuckers. I think Lollar make some too - probably lots of other options. You could even, maybe, put some mini-humbuckers in there?

Re: SG Classic?
Also, if you stuck with 'batwing' style pick guards, even re-routing for full size humbuckers would be 'reversible' from an aesthetic point of view.

Re: SG Classic?
Thanks!
Looks like a 1/4" towards neck and a 1/4" towards bridge would do it, no problem. It would be simple, but I just can't do it. I'll check if a local guitar builder will route it. I'll weight the routing cost vs p-90 sized humbuckers. I already have a 490r and a 498t from another project. |

Re: SG Classic?
You can easily do this with a rasp, chisel, or dremel. Remember, all of your handy work will be covered by the pickguard. If you are never selling the guitar, who cares what it looks like under the hood?

I also lined the entire control cavity with copper shielding, and it took care of most of the hum. Also put in 500K pots, big improvement. |

Thinner??? Both of mine are definitely fatter than the neck on my Standard and Special.
