Gibson sg 61 reissue
Hey. I got a 61 reissue used from guitar center awhile back for a killer deal, 1300 with tax to be exact. Ive posted on here before about it not staying in tune that well. Well its gotten better at that because I noticed that i strung the strings wrong at first, haha. But anyways, its still not staying in tune like a gibson should. Also, no matter how much i mess with the intonation, theres a shitload of places on the neck when playing, that just dont sound right. mostly when you play full chords, or bar a couple strings for a solo lick. Idk, should i get the TP-6 bridge or what. I love the way the guitar plays, the neck is my favorite neck on any guitar ive played. I love the pickups too. But the sour notes and tuning issues is seriously making me want to sell the mother ****er. any advice would be appreciated

Re: Gibson sg 61 reissue
and oh yea, i forgot to add, there is no signs of any kind of abuse to this guitar, i found one ding on the body, and thats if you look at the guitar at a certain angle as the light hits it. Also, ive already had it set up by a pro

Re: Gibson sg 61 reissue
yea i already did that when i restrung the guitar a couple days ago. It helped a lot with the tuning, but theres still sour notes. My dad has a standard sg, and i played that to see if it had the sour notes too, to just see if thats how sg's sound, but no. and techniqually the reissue should be a step above since its hundreds of dollars more

Re: Gibson sg 61 reissue
it takes time, you'll have to do it more than once. You may even have to take it to a tech. Tuning stability and sour notes aren't necessarily related. Though if the nut is improperly cut that will affect the intonation

Re: Gibson sg 61 reissue
It sounds like there may be multiple issues, which, since it was hanging on the wall at a GC, is no big surprise. Save yourself the headache and take it to a good tech for a setup.

Re: Gibson sg 61 reissue
Yea, the tuning has gotten a lot better since i restrung, i think the main problem there was the fact that i looped the 1st 3 strings like 5 times around instead of just 2 or 3. The main sour note that i find is on the twelve fret when i bar the B and high E string it sounds pretty off. Which sucks because i solo a lot in E. Also when i play little wing theres a lot of parts that sound off. like almost shaky, which a lot of that song is just playing like 2 notes parts of chords. idk its hard to explain.

Re: Gibson sg 61 reissue
I had this problem with my 2000 SG Standard, I removed strings and checked 12 screws and 6 nuts, the tuners were not fixed corectly.
Why? May be low frequencies from the amps or wood.... but now the SG stays in tune one week |

...and yes, the nut slots most likely need to be "refined" so that they work properly. You should also check the bridge saddle slots for burrs and/or sharp edges.

Re: Gibson sg 61 reissue
sour note, as in fretbuzz?
yeah a fret job will do the trick. if the note is just off without any buzzing, you've got an intonation issue. easy fix.

Re: Gibson sg 61 reissue
theres buzzing in some places, just like any guitar. I play hard so its almost impossible for me to play a guitar without fret buzz, and still have reasonable action. By "sour note" I mean the note is literally sour by being off pitch. and the intonation is good. ive messed with it multiple times just thinking thats the problem, its not
