Melody Maker with P90?
Hi,
I recently ready about the Gibson Melody Maker with the P90 element. Unfortunately this is no more available in stores (AFAIK), and Gibson now makes one without a P90 element. Anyone knows if the MM *with* a P90 element is still available? Or, if I buy the newer one, and just replace the element, would that be the same, or are there more differences? Thanks. |

Re: Melody Maker with P90?
joan jetts sig model runs a burstbucker 3. you could get one of those and put a P94 or a duncan phat cat in its place.

The older P-90 loaded MM is discontinued, your best bet for finding one of those is E-bay. To replace the pickup in the current MM, you are going to have to route the body to accept a P-90. I'd say DJ's got the best idea, get the Joan Jett and replace it with a 'bucker sized P-90.

Re: Melody Maker with P90?
yeah, y'know epiphone made some MIJ lp specials (like the gibsons) that you can nab on ebay for like 500USD or so. I think there an auction link in the epiphone forums to one right now.

Re: Melody Maker with P90?
lucky....y'know, I bet you could route out the body pretty easily... treat it like a strat and just route it too wide and cover it with the pickguard and if you use a soapbar p90 mount it to the body or a dog ear'd p90 to the pickguard.

Re: Melody Maker with P90?
i've got a nice old 59 melody maker that had been routed for a humbucker.
i replaced that with an old p-90 and it is just 1 fantastic guitar. at the time i had 2 single cut jr's and a double ,all vintage. this lil old melody maker kicked their ass's. if you find an old 1, you can't go wrong.i've had a few of the new 1's thru here, not bad, but nothing like a vintage 1. kept them for a little while and passed them on. the designer series from the 80's are very nice ,although they have a humbucker, and they are as well a much better guitar than the new 1's

Re: Melody Maker with P90?
I'd like to get my grubby paws on a new melody maker and mod the crap out of it. I just don't like the minimalist headstock, so its at the bottom of my GAS list.

Re: Melody Maker with P90?
Me, too, but I actually love that headstock. I'm seriously thinking one of those is going to be my next fiddle purchase.

Re: Melody Maker with P90?
I'd just add the horns back to the headstock and it'd be right as rain.hmm...

Re: Melody Maker with P90?
Besides the element and pickguard (or lack thereof) are there any other significant differences between the two MM re-issues? Or to phrase it differently, should I keep looking for the older re-issue or just go ahead and buy the newer one. If the quality of the hardware is similar, I may just do that. I can always replace the element myself if needed.

Re: Melody Maker with P90?
Just got myself a new Melody Maker (without the P90). I tried two different models in the store, and there was actually a big difference in weight. I bought the heavier one. The element is set up really close to the strings, so it is really loud. But it plays really nice and sounds great through a Fender Tweed Deluxe.
I am thinking about swapping the element out for the highly recommended P90. Is this an easy job to do myself? I'd appreciate any experiences anyone like to share. Thanks!
