Played a Custom Shop ES-339... cracked
I got to play a 2008 (I think) Custom Shop ES-339 (asking $2300)... Tobacco Burst, thick neck, played well, sounded great. I was going to trade in my 2008 Longhorn on it when I noticed a small crack (1") at the base of the front. Showed it to the salesman, and he spotted a longer crack running thru the tailstop bolt (1" to the pups, 2-3" to the base). These cracks went thru the finish and the wood following the grain. he said it was a from a lack of humidity since they had a humifier failure 6 months prior.
He said he couldn't sell it in that condition without checking with the owner (private collection). I keep thinking about this guitar. Should I just give up on it? Should I still consider a trade?

If it's following the grain from the tailpiece bolt, I'd skip. It's bound to affect a bridgepost sooner or later, and while I'm sure that can be fixed, I wouldn't want anything wrong with what I consider a vital tone area.

Re: Played a Custom Shop ES-339... cracked
Funny you should say that. I was at Long and Macquade and grabebd a ES-339 to check if it had a sticker. I already have a ES-339, but for some reason mine was missing the inside sticker. Anyways, while looking at it I saw cracks all over the bridge area, and along the face of the guitar following the grain like you said. The finish wasn't smooth at all.
So I took it to the front desk and showed it to them. I wasn't going to buy it, but I thought I would be helpful and show them that their new guitar was having issues. Well they took it to the back. Today I went back to look at their used section and what do I find the same ES-339 on the self with a sticker saying it was $175 dollars off. Even on mine I have a little scratch on the lower horn and got $75 bucks knocked off for it. Maybe their is a problem with the finishing process in Memphis.

It wouldn't surprise me that they waited too long to report it to Gibson and get their money back. You would think whoever is opening the boxes would look that over.
