Out of curiosity...
How many people here actually have played the Firebird X before?

Re: Out of curiosity...
I have not played one. I understand where you're going with this.
There are many logical reasons why I dislike the design. There are many emotional reasons why Henry turned me off when he presented the thing. |

They haven't released them yet. How many people do you THINK have played one?

Re: Out of curiosity...
Exactly. Everyone talks about it as though they've spent an hour with the thing already.

I use one Monkey on my Champion 600, the other on my Crate V-18 112 with the EQ. That's it. I have tried the effects on the Digitech, but all I ever use are 3 Marshall amp simulators and 3 Deluxe Reverb simulators with various cab settings, and then only really for fun. I've had the Line 6 longest of all, the effects on that never get used. I don't really ever use effects other than an overdrive and a dash of reverb. Why on Earth would I need to play a Firebird X to know I have no use for it? I HAVE played guitars with Roland Synths, but never found a need for one, why would a Firebird X be any different? |

Re: Out of curiosity...
I have said I don't like it, I think it's ugly. I don't need to play it to know I don't care for it, in addition to having no use for all of that.
I am more than entitled to hold and share that opinion, whether you like it or not. Point to where I said it sucks. |

Took the words right out of my keyboard.
There's no reason for me to try one out--I can't afford one.

Re: Out of curiosity...
I'm uninterested in this offense to Occam's Razor. I'd think a guitarist who can afford the 5k for this guitar could afford some decent effects if they want them. If they don't want them, why pay for them?
I'm sure it has some useful tones in it. But I don't see it being very useful to me; I play mostly at home, and play out a little. Rather than loading the guitar down with features of dubious utility, Gibson needs to focus on its core business: fine woods dressed well and priced competitively. It wouldn't hurt if they put out a guitar that didn't look so ugly, too. By packing what some guitarists might find to be a useful suite of effects into a guitar so hard to appreciate aesthetically, they've needlessly limited thier potential market, and taken a big risk. Hopefully, it doesn't sink them.

I think the last time they were there was when they released the original HD 6X Pro Digital LP (the precursor to the Robot-series LPs)?TBH, they really haven come up with anything that's really "NAMM-worthy" in a long time, so I'm not surprised, there have been so many no-shows. As far as all the hate on the FTX? You don't have to touch a turd to know that it's going to stink! The signature of a great guitar is that the design, feel/playability, and sound come together as one. The FTX is ugly, WAY over-complicated, too expensive, and due to the amount of digital crap stuffed into it, has a high potential for failure, so... There are enough more important problems that need to be taken care of (specifically with QC) before Henry J/Gibson should even think about filing for bankruptcy.

At Winter NAMM, they traditionally rent out one of the upstairs ballrooms but only allow invited Buyers, Distributors, and Press into their room. From time to time they were known to open their room up to the general NAMM public for 1 hour on Sunday (typically in the late afternoon when everyone has already left). In the last 4 or 5 years I've been, they have been there every year. When the Dark Fire was released, they had their room open to the public for the entire show. They had about 20 computers set up with Dark Fires plugged into them for you to try out. It was actually a cool set up. Last year they were there but didn't allow general public in at all.

Re: Out of curiosity...
Not saying your stance doesn't have merit. The way they do it, they may as well not be there.
When you consider that they aren't really all that great at keeping secrets...and the ones they keep aren't so great anyway. Taylor guitars has a ballroom and displays everything they make...and then has acoustic concerts in that same room. I saw Coheed and Cambria (sp) with about 80 other people for a kick ass acoustic show. PRS gets a separate ballroom exclusively for performances. I would love to see Gibson get over themselves and do something cool for once. Not sure they realize how much everyone there thinks they suck. But I'll see for myself in a few days and will let you know if they are proudly showing off their Fireturd.
