ES-335 TD CRR Guitar Porn
Thought I'd post pics of two of my best guitars. The CRR stands for "Country Rock Regular." There's also a CRS, "Country Rock Stereo," with slightly different features and finish. They were a limited batch run in '79 with only 300 made. They feature Dirty Fingers pickups, a factory coil tap, factory brass nut, TP-6 fine tuner and "antique burst" finish. I am not sure about other ES-335s from the period, but these also have long tenons.
Here's a link to my registry and info page on my own site if you're curious. Gibson ES-335 TD CRR « dumb.org ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: ES-335 TD CRR Guitar Porn
Holy smoke!
I have an '80 ES-335; it had the factory coil tap, but those awful black-epoxy-encased humbuckers that actually sounded like they were encased in black epoxy. Long, long gone. There was a trapeze on mine, then an incorrectly placed stop, then the trapeze again - I remember those fine-tuning tailpieces, they were great! - more different pickups than I can remember, all kinds of wiring schemes ... several nuts, two refrets, a thousand bars, a bunch of different bridges ... it's my "thank god it can't talk" guitar. Not just for the secrets, but for all the terrible things it would say to me. I feel bad enough about the whole thing already. It's going through another pickup change right now, and I just looked in the neck cavity - can't find my camera, but I'll just tell you that the tenon's exactly the same as yours. Same beautiful dark colour around the outside as yours, but what looks like quite different wood - or maybe that's the "antique" part of the "antique burst". Gorgeous. And aren't the block inlays great? Really, really nice from that time. The neck on mine is 3-piece maple. Loud and resonant and vibrant and fun - but rock-solid, too; I once broke the third string mid-set, and the tuning did not budge. Who doesn't love a great mahogany neck? But these laminated necks can be great, too. What do your guitars have, or have you said, already? Thanks for the thread! |

Re: ES-335 TD CRR Guitar Porn
Everything on these are bone stock. From head to tail, the features are like this-
Three piece maple neck Grovers Brass nut Block Inlays Maple top Cream binding Cream hardware Cream topped factory "Dirty Fingers" pickups Factory Coil Tap TP-6 Tail piece The one with black knobs is named Coffee. It's got a wide, flat profile neck and a slightly darker tone overall. I prefer that for slide. The gold knob one is named Honeybrown. She's got more of a slim taper style neck. Both have a real wide range of tones, getting anything from a growly 335 neck tone to a thin, bright telecaster tone. It's almost like having two or three guitars in one. @Rico - The SG is from '71. It's called an SG Pro. They replaced the SG Deluxe model. That was bone stock too. I just traded it for a '71 LP GT. ![]() @Benjamin - I love the brass nut. Really gives it a nice bright tone in open positions. My '74 LP GT has a brass nut too, installed some time in the '70s. It's a great little upgrade for a guitar that might be a tad too muddy. Glad everyone liked them! I figure if I ever end up with one more, I'll have an even 1% of all the units produced.

Re: ES-335 TD CRR Guitar Porn
O M G! Just surfing around and found this post.
I used to have one of these! (ES-335 TD CRR from '79). Bought it from Brian Guitars in New Haven, CT before I even had a license and before I started to work there (in about 1980 or '81). I don't remember it having Dirty Fingers p'ups, though. I installed a Seymour JB bridge p'up in it. Boy, I wish I had that thing back.... |

Re: ES-335 TD CRR Guitar Porn
Howdy,
Thanks for posting, Sangandongo. We've posted about our CRRs on the Gibson talk forum over the years. I still enjoy my 1980 model. Any other Gibson ES-335CRR owners? |

Re: ES-335 TD CRR Guitar Porn
I am sad to say that mine have gone to new owners. I traded them for a '60 Les Paul Special. One is owned by a national touring band, the other... who knows. I still crave them from time to time.

Re: ES-335 TD CRR Guitar Porn
Hi,
I just happen to stumble on to this thread and I think I may have one of these guitars. It started out as a mystery to me to find a 335 with a lower bout switch, brass nut, and uncovered pickups. Plus another switch that wasn't working but appeared to be a coil tap. I pulled the pickups, out of curiosity, and found they were stamped 1979. Does anyone know if these guitars could have possibly had a bigsby because this guitar looks like it did at one time. One other curious thing, the front is a usual sunburst but the back looks like walnut. The truss rod cover also says "custom". I am a little baffled. |
