My 1928 Gibson L5 acoustic guitar

This is my favourite acoustic instrument of all time. It was left to me by my father.

Thought I'd show it off because some folk will never see an instrument to the likes of this again. It's 100% all original with no work. A true time capsule piece! It was played, but mainly in the open position jusdging by the neck wear on the back.

Les Paul himself has a couple of these, and says they're his favourites too.

The thing has amazing tone, and plays really easily. It has a wide flat fingerboard radius, and has this unearthly reverb going on.

The last pic shows the original owners, one of whom had this guitar. Don't know who they are - but this photo was found in the case. I also don't know who had the other L5.

This one will go to a museum after I'm gone.

Re: My 1928 Gibson L5 acoustic guitar

Thanks for your comments guys.

I get all excited whenever I gingerly lift it out the case for a play.

It's an indescribable feeling! Part nerves, part butterflies, part 'wow', part 'whoah.' It's a work of art, and like a playable sculpture.

Great for Atkin's fingerstyle, blues, folk, and jazz stuff.

Here's some more pictures of it... Check out the neck wear around the open position, the one piece flamed neck and the original patent no. on the brass/gold plated tailpiece.

The flamed maple is incredible on the sides and the neck.

This guitar features in 'The Ultimate Guitar Book' by Tony Bacon.

Mines not quite as old or pretty, but i have a 1948 Maple
Harmony Cremona, that once belonged to my uncles famous
country singer cousin (would rather not mention his name)
and passed it on to me later in life

A couple of old beauties right there.

Don't put it in a museum. Hand it off to your children, and their childrens children...

Re: My 1928 Gibson L5 acoustic guitar

I'm a big fan of L-5's. I would like to play one someday and possibly own. You are indeed very lucky! I have not seen a 1928 L-5 in such excellent cond!

Could you post a pic of the Gibson label in the "F" hole?

Re: My 1928 Gibson L5 acoustic guitar

Gorgeous! I had a chance about 8 years ago to buy a refinished one from '29 from George Gruhn's in Nashville. It had been refinned by Monteleone. Unbelievable guitars! I screwed up by not buying it.

Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Re: My 1928 Gibson L5 acoustic guitar

This one should be recorded. Really. Please try to do it before it goes to a museum.

I think the museum is the worst destiny. Find a top guitar musician and have him play it.

Re: My 1928 Gibson L5 acoustic guitar

Hi Fella's,

Thanks for all your comments.

Just to allay a few of your fears... it won't get shut away in a museum, I play this guitar and love it big time. I was just being flippant. It will also get recorded someday, when my day-job subsides I do have enough material for my own 'solo-guitar' album. If Martin Taylor ever fancies recording with it then great.

It will be my long term project to have my own album made of original stuff and a few fingerstyle versions of other's tunes.

After I'm gone, well we'll see. Perhaps it will be a heirloom. I'm hoping my as yet unborn offspring will take up guitar in a big way! If not, someone had better come up with the money and have a seriously good home.
