Get this guitar?

Hi all, so I've got a bit of a situation, i decided to stop by Guitar Center today and check out some strats since I've been really gasing for one, I dont usually like strats but I figured I could compile some info on what I did like and see if I could get a warmoth one. So I play every single strat in the Fender room, MiM/Mij/Mia/road worn/ everything, i played atleast 20 strats and I come to the conclusion that I really dont like them, the sound is there, but the feel is not.

So I move on to see what I think of the Telecasters, these were not bad but I really wasnt feeling it. So I went to the acoustic room and played some acoustics, lots of Martin's and Taylors but again, it felt like I was just going through the motions, so I walk over to the Gibson room to see what's in there. 4 Sg Standards, 2 Sg specials, 1 sg classic, 2 Les Paul Studios, an Explorer and a Custom Shop ES-339. (Note: there were a few custom shop guitars in the glass but you have to have a sales guy open it so i didnt go there). So I've never played a 339 and decided I should, and, well it felt like crap to say the truth, as did the explorer, and the sg standards. The studios were alright but they've been out on the floor for a while (2 years) so I can't judge them because thousands of little kids have crapped on these things. So then I go the the Sg classic and it was really neck heavy, like the body was weightless. So I figure I mind as well test out the Sg specials, I grab both off the wall and notice the black one has a very nice weight to it, I put the red one back up and get the black one on a strap, it is balanced very well. The body had a very nice weight, my main complaint with Sg's is the thin neck and light body, but this had neither, it had a nice chunky neck and probably was just over 7 pounds. So I start to play it and I'm like "Damn!" I liked it, I never liked Sg's but this one had a certain feeling and I've been thinking about it all day now. I played well over 50 guitars and this one stood out.

It's a 2009 Gibson SG Special in black (I think it's the satin one), listed at $800. You guys think I should buy it? I just got a crapload of new gear this summer and only have $200 left but my parents said they would loan me the rest. So you think I should buy it or save my money? If I save my money it would most likely go towards a new guitar next summer, most likely another les paul or a telecaster, or even a new acoustic, im not sure really.

tl;dr I found a guitar I like a lot, it's not what I was looking for but it feels really nice in my hands, buy it or save the money?

Thanks!

Re: Get this guitar?

what you really want is a strat or a tele, but you like the SG alot? I see from your sig, that your dont have a Fender already, and you dont have an SG either. Both would make fine additions. Personally I was a Strat player before I got my first Gibson (LP) I had/have a strat that needs some work (or to be replaced) and instead I bought an SG (Classic w/ P90s) because I found a nice, rare one that I really liked and I had the money. Now I like the SG so much, I dont even care about the Strat anymore. Im sure one day Ill take care of it, but having the SG with single coils took up alot of the space that was left empty by not having a usable Fender.

Sometimes its hard to find a guitar that speaks to you, when you find that guitar, and can afford, and pass it up, it may haunt you

Geez....what a long post! I lost my interest at about "So I move on...." If you like a particular guitar, then buy it. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Was that so hard?

Re: Get this guitar?

I would say save your money until you find something that you really want. It sounds like you somewhat settled for this one because you were tired of looking. Sleep on it for a few days, play it again, and then see what you think.

Yea I don't have all my guitars listed in my sig, ive also got an Ibanez GRG(super strat) and an Ibanez IJX (HSS strat copy). but im really liking this guitar but im torn by the fact that it's like the exact opposite of what i was looking for but felt so good. (like eating piles of ice cream)

Re: Get this guitar?

Finding the right SG is more important than finding the right Strat or Tele. The right SG is harder to find.

Ive found to be the case in my experience as well (I might even go so far to say Gibsons in general are like that)

Re: Get this guitar?

Im dont know much about haggling prices, but I would just straight ask them "is there anything you can do to help me with the price?" (maybe ask for the manager first) if its an old product, and you have the cash up front, I imagine they will be willing to lower the price just to get it out of their inventory

Most i've ever talked down was 1,950$ to 1,800$. I picked up a Boss Loop Station with the extra.

I have a guitar center 10 percent off coupon that if you pm me with an email address I will send you. It's good until 8/31. Or if you have a junky piece of equipment guitar center is running a promotion that gives you fifteen percent off when you trade something in.

the 10% off excludes gibsons.

and i was just thinking, should i buy something for like $20 and then try and turn it in for like $5 but then take the 15% off?

Geez, give your parents a break. Looks like you got enough gear to keep you busy for quite a while. I would think all that time spent shopping for a guitar you don't even want (or need), would be better spent practicing on all the guitars and gear you have already.

It's not in the gear, it's in the fingers.

... and I felt bad for talking my Mom into buying me a wah wah pedal when I was 16.

GitFiddle is right and we all know it... way deep down inside our feeble minds, below all the lusting for pointless gear.
