USED Stamp on top of headstock... WHY?

Why is it on Epi guitars and not other guitars... and how much does it de-value a guitar as opposed to one that doesn't. JUST WHY and WHO IS DOING IT?

The "Used" stamp means that the instrument is a Factory 3rd. You can find these instruments at Pawn shops, and at MIRC for example.

Re: USED Stamp on top of headstock... WHY?

These guitars come from MIRC, as far as I am aware I have never seen one without the MIRC serial number sticker on it. MIRC is a company that purchases damaged or blemished stock and does a repair and complete refurb on them. They then sell the guitars to dealers who then sell them to the public. These guitars may have had anything from a very minor blemish in the finish all the way up to serious damage like a broken headstock. They deal with a number of manufacturers, not only Epiphone.

Here's their website which has plenty of information on the company along with some examples of the work they do.

MIRC: The US largest wholesale supplier of used guitars and other musical instruments.

The Guitar Dater web site does NOT help you determine if a guitar is real or fake. It ONLY decodes the serial number according to a set formula. They have no database of guitars.

Factory 2nd, can't say that I have ever heard of a factory 3rd.

I have a Hamer Import stamped USED over the SN. The finish is rough, but its a great playing guitar.

A Factory 2nd is a cosmetic flaw. A Factory 3rd is beyond that. Major cosmetic or structural flaw for example.

Re: USED Stamp on top of headstock... WHY?

I would assume that Factory 3rd also includes guitars which are damaged during transport from the factory to the Epi inspection center in the US. The cost of shipping them back to the factory in Asia for repair would be prohibitive and Epiphone have no facilities in the US so they probably sell them to MIRC at a well discounted price.

Considering the volume of guitars that Epi sells, there must be a good number that are damaged in shipping both from overseas as well as those shipped to dealers in the US and Canada which arrive damaged and which the dealers ship to end users and are returned to the dealers.

Who knows...without companies like MIRC to purchase these guitars, they would simply be scrapped and might even result in higher retail prices.

Re: USED Stamp on top of headstock... WHY?

I got my Genesis through MIRC with used embossed on rear of headstock and a sticker with a new serial no. Beneath that is the original serial but the last 3 digits were obliterated. Vendor said that it was either a demo or had a very minor fault.Being in the UK,this was the only way to get a Gen. I have a keen eye, guitar wise, but could only find a little overspray on the neck binding which is on the lower side of neck anyway.
Apart from that it was perfect. Of course i always do my own set up, as soon as i get any axe to get to my liking, but the Gens' was'nt bad.
Of course the price was good, and i got a hard case in the deal, so i ended up very pleased.

Re: USED Stamp on top of headstock... WHY?

I've never read any complaints about MIRC refurbed guitars other than the price they tend to sell for on eBay is not generally a great saving over a new guitar. Another thing is that sometimes they do not have the original pickups in them, you might get basic Epi pups in a guitar that normally comes with Probuckers or Gibson pups for example, and you have to be careful about that when buying.
