Re: Fake LP on ebay

I'm not expert on spotting fakes but the cutaway doesn't look quite right and the upper bass side looks a little off too. What else am I missing and am I incorrect on what I think is wrong?

I hope whoever bought it realizes it was fake and was just stopping others from buying it.

Did anybody report it?

Re: Fake LP on ebay

Well I sent an email to Gibson and sent a message to that guy selling it. He told me to fuck off, exact words. I then told him how ebay and gibson are both informed that it is a fake.

He then sent me a couple PMs apologizing and thanking me for setting him straight. He refunded the guy's money and didn't realize it was a fake.

I then said a big problem with his auction, if he didn't really know it was a fake, why did he claim it was from Guitar Center.

Fucking asshole. It is obvious he knew and now he is scared.

Re: Fake LP on ebay

The guy sent me a batch of PMs threatening to turn me into the authorities for terrorist threats.

I never threatened him. I told him what he is doing is illegal and he could get into legal trouble for it or he could sell it to somebody who might do something stupid because he got ripped off.

Very far from a threat. Then he tells me that shame on Gibson for making guitars in China and stamping made in USA on the back. He told me that three times and three times I had to tell him that Gibson doesn't make them over there and they didn't make that guitar.

Then he asks me why I even care, I didn't buy the guitar. I don't like anyone getting ripped off and as some people on here might remember, I got ripped off when a seller sent me a different guitar than the one in the ad. 1700 dollars for a les paul that was actually molded in plastic.

Ebay did nothing, paypal did nothing.

Anyway, I think I saved this buyer from getting ripped off and I scared the seller.

Yes, I am bitter about it. I am in a fucking wheelchair, I had a guy knock me out of my wheelchair and steal my Les Paul, then I saved and bought that one for 1700 on ebay only to have it fake. Am I bitter? You bet.

Re: Fake LP on ebay

Ebay and I have had it out on these fakes, they refuse to do anything. I have reported about 50 at least and they will not pull the auction. I dont have a problem with selling them as admitted fakes and asking like $300 for them, but damn...claiming they are real and gettting $1500 thats just out right criminal. I think ebay relaizes they get the commission off the $1500 so they dont do anything, these crooks are just padding ebays pockets, the more they sell for the more fee money ebay collects...ebay is just as crooked as the scammers are.....they are all in it together those bastards.

Re: Fake LP on ebay

Any chance one you guys have some experience with early '70's Gibsons?

I just bought a '70-72 (by serial) ES 335. But not after spotting some plainly fishy auctions.

I suspect the guitar is OK and the guy I bought it from seems honest as the day is long, and also a guitar tech.

But the problem I'm having is that I've observed several ES-335's from the early '70's and they seem to have differences in the headstock's side curvature, the Gibson logo, the crown inlay, and the tuning pegs (single ring and double) ect. So I'm trying to find out why, although I suspect that Norlin was playing around with changing things a lot back then.

Below the headtock of the guitar I bought. It's logo script font, crown, 'single' ring tuners) appear to match another ES-345 on eBay whose serial number tracks to 1974-1975.
(Please GOTO below link to see similar guitar)
http://i.ebayimg.com/15/!BY24y5gBmk~$(KGrHgoOKiEEjlLmfVPLBKj)qyg2cQ~~_12_s b.JPG

BTY, coincidently both there guitars are in excellent condition.

Are you referring to the LP or the ES-335 I asked about?

If the ES, by Nibson, do you mean to imply it's not a Gibson?

Well here are 2 Gibson guitars that have the same style headstock, logo, crown, and single ring tuners. Notice that they are both in extremely good condition. Also notice the 2 'blips' on each side of the 'S' in Gibson and the wder custs in the crown inlay. Compare them to my last example provided below.

G-base 1973 Walnut with same logo and headstock - very mint
1973 Gibson ES-335 ON SALE NOW!!!! > Guitars : Archtop Electric & Acoustic | Gbase.com

Wine red ES 345 with same logo and headstock - very mint
1974 Gibson ES-345 Stereo- rare wine red finish - eBay (item 180399336677 end time Sep-20-09 15:08:02 PDT)

Now here is a 1970-72 on ebay that has the other 'different; style headstock shape, logo, crown and double ring tuners. This is the logo that I believe is correct and which I find on the other Gibson guitars I find from that period early 70's peroid. Notice the cuts in the crown are thinner and those 'blips' are not around the 'S' letter in Gibson.

Walnut ES 335 advertised 1970-1972, with different headstock
Gibson ES-335 TD walnut (1970-72) OHC, EC - eBay.ch (endet 16.09.09 16:58:11 MESZ)

Are they both correct? And why are they different?

Re: Fake LP on ebay

Why are these different? The first one is from a '70-72 ES-335.
The second is from a '73 ES-335 and has a headstock that looks the same as on the one I bought whose serial number tracks to '70-71.

I don't mean to offend but an explanation like that (without any basis of support or reference to the issues) is none at all - and only mungs up my very serious questions and concerns.

I say serious because what I paid for this one 'ES' is perhaps more that all those Xavieres (that you have in your photo album) put together.

Do you even own a Gibson or anything vintage?

Well they all seem authentic and high quality to me too - but it just seems odd that Gibson would have used two different headstock shapes, logo scripts, crown inlays, and tuners on its ES guitars made between 1970 and 1975.

The coincidence of all the ones (I was seeing) in excellent condition having the same style logo etc., seemed as odd.
