Re: 1972 and 1974 Les Paul Customs

I thinp $6k is high priced myself as 70's customs always seem to be more readily available on E Bay then deluxes for some reason...even a great 70's deluxe should only be between $3 & $4k...

Maybe late 70s LPCs with maple necks & stamped patent pickups & wider frets are readily available. But early 70s LPCs with fretless wonder frets, decal patent pickups, minty waffleback tuners, and mahognay necks - that have not been abused or Groverized or otherwise modified - are not easy to find on ebay. And these are near mint. Both are collectors pieces, not players. They only shipped 106 of the 1972 t-bursts, and it was the first year for that color. How many 1972 t-burst LPCs have you seen on ebay? Near mint? And the 74 model, while they made many, many more of them in that color in 1974, is almost like new. It was kept under the bed in the case its entire lifetime by the original owner before I bought it a few months ago. It will be hard to find one nicer.

The blue book of guitars puts an excellent condition LPC between 1970-75 at $4K. But it says nothing about collector pieces or minty ones. There is a huge price difference.

Thanks Mike. And thanks for not criticizing the price, especially since there is a best offer option.

Re: 1972 and 1974 Les Paul Customs

You guys always think I criticize prices..I've bene doing this awhile and IMHO I think $6k is high for a 70's Gibson...that is my opinion and I am entitled to it...for a few $k more you could probably find a 60's LP

since there is a Make Offer option then make one for less and see if you can score...

if you can than that is a good deal...if you got to go the full $6k...I think it is high and would not pay $6k for a 70's guitar...but that's just me...

Amazing shape on both of them - the top on the 74 is sweet as well!

Maybe it is more courteous to keep your opinion to yourself sometimes.

Re: 1972 and 1974 Les Paul Customs

It seems they are getting to be worth more and more all the time.

It may be tomorrows price, but, I must say, they look really clean.

And now I see why the guys in the other thread were hammering you for being a jerk. You can't keep your opinion to yourself. You just have to belittle everyone else's gear. At first, I thought they were being too harsh. Now I don't.

it wasn't that many years ago that people were saying the same thing about '68s and '69s, was it?

IMO the pre-75 Customs with the mahogany neck and trans tenon are the most desirable, others may have different opinions. I agree the market is confusing on them, but I have seen '74s listed as high as $7K. Course, we know listing doesn't mean selling price, but that is where the market appears to be heading.

And when it comes to collectibles, mint always commands a higher price.

...well,I can say for certainty that I've seen three Customs in the 72-74 era go for the $7k range in the last two months on daBay...

+1, and there are several listed now in the same neighborhood.

I still find it amazing that 70's strats are routinely going for $7K+...geez.

I think that's a good starting price for those LPs...very nice.

I also have a 1975 model with a mahogany neck, fretless wonder frets, patent bridge & waffleback tuners. It was one of the last with those parts as they transitioned many parts that year. It does have the transitioned patent stamped pickups and reflector cap knobs. Also a one owner guitar (before me) and really nice with all the papers. All original. I would sell it if anyone was interested. Cherry sunburst.

I have more! In the post above I mentioned a 1975 model. But I also have a 1971 and a 1973 model, both very nice. Both are cherry sunburst. 1971 was the first year for that color. They only made a few of them. I have seen a couple of othes from that year over the last 12 months, but they all had issues. This one is straight and VERY clean - much like the two I have listed on ebay. If someone is interested, let me know! I am transitioning to older guitars.

1971:

They did not make one that year.
