Blacklighting A LP..
Im about to buy a blacklight lamp on ebay, im going to use it to try and detect if theres any repairs etc on a 74 20th anniversary Custom im interested in buying..
Im mainly looking at checking that there isnt a headstock break, my question is, how would i detect there is a break? Would there be a glow or outline where its been glued back on? Also, what else on the guitar would i be able to detect with a blacklight? Refret? If so, how would i spot it? This is the blacklight im about to get, anybody got any advice on wether this is the best type to get? Its only cheap but says it is used to detect faults.. UV 4W ultraviolet blacklight torch inspection lamp UV-A on eBay (end time 15-Aug-10 10:17:55 BST)

Re: Blacklighting A LP..
I don't know anything about blacklighting, so I can't help there. I have been told that one dead giveaway for refrets is the absence of nibs (the little parts of the binding that cover the fret ends). That's not always an absolute though, either.

Chris, you would be better off posting this thread in the "Vintage" section. Those boys spend half their lives in a "Blacklit" environment!!

Thanks for the advice on frets J.T!
Haha nice one cookie, I've posted it in there as well now, see if I can get some expert knowledge!

Re: Blacklighting A LP..
I've never seen a headstock repair that wasn't completely obvious.
That being said, I own a 74 20th anniversary LPC WITH a headstock repair AND a re-fret. It's still the best guitar I've ever played. Period. |
