Newly acquired 1979 Gibson Les Paul Custom white
Hi All, here's my newly acquired 1979 Gibson Les Paul Custom in very aged white. Appears to be all original (apart from tuners and maybe knobs?) in good condish. One piece mahogany body (not sandwich) with three piece maple neck. Smaller volute than my '72 SG and fitted with Schaller tuners a long time ago as they've also got tobacco smoke stains!
Pots dated 78 while pick ups and control plate ink stamped April 79. Serial number confirms 79. Lovely patina ;-) Any comments/thoughts gratefully received. Any expert opinions? What about fretless wonder frets. Do I keep it original or go practical and fit taller ones? Headstock looks a darker shade in pics but it's just the light. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice score!
YOU should be the one to decide whether you can live with the tiny frets. I have a '74 Custom w/those frets and plan to re-fret to a larger size when I find a local (hopefully) luthier i can trust to do the job right. |

+1 on the frets. Don't let us decide, figure out what works best for you. If you have to, go to a local guitar shop and A/B your guitar against something with taller frets, then decide.
That thing is GORGEOUS! On a personal note, I'd put black/gold reflectors on there and swap the switch tip for a black one, but that's just me.Off topic: Am I the only person who bends the pickguard mounting bracket so that the pickup cutouts are flush against the mounting rings? I think it looks better than being at an angle and touching the guitar body.

Nice find. 31 year old guitar.
Weight? close to 11 lbs?

Yeah the tuner are definitely not original. You could get some Groves and replace those unless you happen to like these tuners.

That's not to say that a '77 or even a '79 never made it out with ABR-1.. The Norlin era didn't follow many rules.
