Home on leave! 1979 Silverburst pics!
I finally got home on leave! This is my "new" 1979 Silverburst Custom. The damage is worse than I expected but still manageable. I was expecting two small screw-holes and one glob of glue, instead I got two large glue spots (that go down to the wood where the former midi pickup was removed) that almost seem like they have melted the finish and one large screw hole. I'll start to work fixing these tomorrow. It looks like BCRGreg's advice still applies, I'm just working with a larger area than expected.
The bridge saddles are in pretty bad shape, so I'll be replacing the bridge also. The neck feels nice, slimmer than a '50s but not as slim as a '60s. The frets are lower than I'm used to, but not uncomfortable. It's badly in need of a setup. Looks "greener" in person. ![]() ![]()

Re: Home on leave! 1979 Silverburst pics!
Well, after trying to match the color with model kit lacquer from the local hobby shop, I gave up and took it to a local luthier. He's got a little shop in an old industrial part of town by the railroad tracks. There are a few old guitars and amps for sale, but the display cases are mostly parts. The headstock repair he was finishing while I was there up looked perfect.
Anyway, he's going to fix up the bad spots and blend them in, buff the entire guitar, put on a new bridge, set the intonation and do a setup. It should be ready Monday. While I'm waiting, I'm playing my 1980 clownburst Standard. It's in great shape. I'll post pics later tonight.

Nice axe! I love those silverbursts. Almost impossible to match the paint because they fade a little 'green'. Beautiful though!
I don't mind the screw hole or glue spots at all. Each mark bears a story of 30 years. |

Re: Home on leave! 1979 Silverburst pics!
I'll be picking up the Silverburst on Friday now instead of yesterday (I kinda' thought a week turnaround was a bit optimistic). I'd rather have it done right than done fast. I'll post pics when it's done. I'd like to play it for the weekend before I go back to Baghdad. Currently still playing the 1980 HSB, which is becoming my favorite. Played the ZW Bullseye for a while today too. Definitely not used to the EMGs through a Marshall, you almost have to try not to throw a pinch harmonic in every third note.
