Value on late 70s Deluxe

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the forum, but being a possible Les Paul owner in the future, I wanted to see what wisdom I could glean My question lies with this Les Paul Deluxe Gold top that I might purchase in the next week. First off, here's some pictures:

So there's the little fella. As far as what the owner tells me, I haven't gotten a serial number yet. Apparently the guitar is all original parts and no repairs at all. Slight abrasion underneath the tail piece and a few small dings. Owner isn't the first owner. He keeps really good care of it though, as you can see. Doesn't have string grounding.

Do you guys have any advice on making sure I land a good purchase? What more must I find out before I should consider buying this guitar? He's selling it to me for $2500 and apparently that's still cheaper than all of the values I found online for this instrument. Would that be a good price to you? More than anything, do these guitars play well?

2500 is a bit much to me... I'd offer 1500 and pass if he doesn't accept that.

Re: Value on late 70s Deluxe

You need to get the serial number. Is this a Goldtop? It's seems to be but the color maybe didn't photo well? I don't know if a Deluxe/Goldtop was available in the late 70's.

Without knowing serial I'm guessing 74-75. Hopefully the Norlin experts will chime in here.

Looks to be good condition but I can't guess on a price. I'm pretty new to the LP world too. Good luck.

I got some appraisals from some instrument value sites and they all price around 3k and higher; could I get help as to why 1500 more accurate? And how does one identify that it was late 70s specifically and not like a '75?

Also, I'll probably get the serial in a few days from now and post it here. Thanks again for your help guys!

Re: Value on late 70s Deluxe

The Nashville bridge tells me that it's '76 or later. Three piece maple neck.. Strange cutaway shape.. Can you give me the serial number? Are there any pics of the sides? One piece or pancake?

A late '70s Deluxe just isn't worth 3k. Maybe to a sucker...

Re: Value on late 70s Deluxe

She's certainly a beauty for sure

Those particular tuning pegs didn't come around until the later 70's, I've even seen them on some 1980 LP's.

Based on the images, I would guess 77 to 80.

As for the $2500 price tag, I've seen some beat-up 70's LPD's come in close to that price. The one you are coveting is in fantastic shape, and $2500 doesn't seem too unreasonable, but I would offer $2200 and see what kind of response you get from the seller.

Good Luck

Re: Value on late 70s Deluxe

1700 / 1800 would be a fair price. 2500 is too much unless you really like it...

Re: Value on late 70s Deluxe

2000$ should be the most you pay, it's really clean but not 2500$ clean..... And everyone is over pricing these right now, it's really stupid.

If they won't go below 2000$ then move on and watch the classifieds here and maybe even the 'bay.

Re: Value on late 70s Deluxe

I paid $2400 USD for my '80 GT just a couple of months back. It was really clean, perhaps moreso than this one, but it's hard to really tell from the pics. With that said, I'm also a lefty, so I get to pay a premium anyway, and because there are fewer lefties made, lefty GTs are rare compared to righties. BTW, that price included shipping.

Re: Value on late 70s Deluxe

Rumbleseat has a '74 for $3000, I'd say $2500 for a '77ish probably isn't out of line anymore.

Re: Value on late 70s Deluxe

It would have to absolutely mint for me to even consider 2500 for a late '70s Deluxe.

..... and play it for an hour through an amp..... I would never drop that kind of coin based on an image.
