1 Norlin Les Paul is enough.
Don't get me wrong...I LOVE MY '80 Les Paul Custom. LOVE IT. Especially since it's been all redone with the final upgrade being the WB Habaneros (with the guitar signed on the inside of the cavity plate by Will Boggs..)
And even though I am left handed....I've actually seen other Norlins for sale...left handed ones. 2 Customs, A Deluxe... Damn...I hate to admit this...but I passed on 'em. Reason? I'll grin and bear it, but for long gigs lugging around 11lbs ain't exactly my idea of fun when it's stretched beyond 3 sets. I gig with the Norlin regularly now...but not all the time. My Studio is much, much lighter... So sure.."man up"...whatever. Last weekend my f'in back was killing me. I also met someone over the weekend who gigged with a guitar just like mine...for 8 years. The dude has permanent shoulder damage. ![]() So...maybe I'll see other Norlins down the road that I might be interested in..but I don't think they're gonna be Les Pauls. I think that Custom is more than enough...more than enough. I can take some weight, but playing that beast for that long isn't something I look forward to. Anyways..the question.... I want to shave a pound or two off this guitar if possible. If I remove the pot plate, the shielded input jack, the can around the tone selector switch, and maybe even (ugh) different tuners...how much weight could that shave off? I don't think I'll do it...but I am curious about this. EDIT: I'm gonna laugh my arse off if no one answers this....

Either way....I love the sound of it...but I can't see myself gigging with it all the time. It's too damned heavy. ![]() (S'all good though....I will probably have a new custom, handmade guitar by...Christmas.... )BTW...thanks for replying guys. I know there's a lot of Norlin love here, but I still think it outta be objective, you know? And no matter how you slice it...11lbs is pretty damned heavy for a guitar.

Re: 1 Norlin Les Paul is enough.
My Norlin is also under 9lbs. 8lbs 14oz.
On an almost unrelated note, 2 Les Pauls is enough. One with HBs, one with P90s. I'm sure that Boles has a photo rebuttal. |

Re: 1 Norlin Les Paul is enough.
How about a post Norlin, '87-'89 LP Custom Lite? I've never weighed them, but I'm sure mine are all under 9 lbs., maybe less than 8 lbs.
Crap, I just realized you're a lefty.....sorry.

I'm glad some folks have lighter Norlins...but mine's heavy. Super heavy. (Still...I'd love to find an old archtop from that era. Just no more LP Customs! )

There is absolutely NO WAY Sentry is going to be seen gigging with a guitar strap that looks like a bra! Holy crap, that is the worst thing I have seen in a long time. If you can't hold it up, get a strat, but whatever you do, DON'T get one of those!!!!!!

Re: 1 Norlin Les Paul is enough.
Killer pic Cookie
A Black Beauty and Ferrari Red You've swept me off my feet...I think I'm in love!!! All you need is a old goldtop that is checked, beaten and bruised until it's turned green....then I'm all yours ![]() ![]() ![]() On a serious note, I think you have to judge Norlins in particular on a case to case basis. I've seen some great ones and some that are just so so. 11lb. is a back breaker any way you look at it. I have a 10lb+ LP and even though it sounds great, I couldn't imagine gigging it on a regular basis....a better choice for home or studio...then again Jimmy Page's #1 burst is only 7 1/2 lbs. and look at all the back trouble he's had. With a nice thick strap, it's doable...I'd just rotate in some lighter guitars during your gig to balance it out and save your back. |
