On a serious note, I think you have to judge Norlins in particular on a case to case basis. I've seen some great ones and some that are just so so. 11lb. is a back breaker any way you look at it. I have a 10lb+ LP and even though it sounds great, I couldn't imagine gigging it on a regular basis....a better choice for home or studio...then again Jimmy Page's #1 burst is only 7 1/2 lbs. and look at all the back trouble he's had.
With a nice thick strap, it's doable...I'd just rotate in some lighter guitars during your gig to balance it out and save your back.

He-he! Jimmy's trouble is he wants to play the darn thing down past his knees!! No wonder his back's f*&%$d!!

I'll bet you could score some killer deals on some Habs on this site from WB...

The tuners and the bridge? Eh, a bit more...

Pots, switch, and input jack? Well...do you need the RS stuff or can you get by with Spragues in it?

The refret.....yeah...that's gonna hurt...but shouldn't you be able to get one of those in with a nut for around 400?

(Or...does it need a truss rod as well?)

I was going with RS and Faber for that stuff.. I don't know about plastic yet.

The truss rod is fine.

Oi, get your sick mind out of the bloody gutter, you perv !!! How on earth do you see a bra in this ?

These are the kind of straps that people marching bands have been using to carry their instruments for ages. It distributes the weight over both shoulders, which is nice if you play a Norlin.

Re: 1 Norlin Les Paul is enough.

To the OP, do not you mean that one 'heavy' LP is enough? Norlins come in lighter flavours.

I cannot discount back problems. George Harrison had them quite a bit, and long before he got his rosewood Telecaster which was heavy as a brick.

As for JP: yes -- but that is because JP is distantly descended from a pygmy. he is only 4 foot 9 or similar. Any shorter and he would be a garden gnome.

Oh, I'm sure they do. For a lot of folks.

Here's my Norlin....

You know, quite honestly I might find a lefty SG or an ES-335 from that era, but why bother? Every Lefty Norlin I've seen for sale in my area are uber heavy.

1 Norlin is enough...hell, I don't even know if I'm going to buy another Gibson...but if I do, the chances are pretty good it won't be a Les Paul model.

JP is at least 6 foot tall. I forget exactly 6 or 6'1", but he's not short. Who knows...maybe it's the extracurricular activities that threw out his back

To the OP, I'd leave the Norlin as is...it's a beauty and the beast! Wear a thick padded strap and rotate in some lightweights.... Honestly, you strike me as more a hollow body type of guy! best of both worlds? - although that could be that Dice's recent acquisition is still fresh in my mind!

Part of the problem is your strap. You have a synthetic strap with metal studs, the worst for a heavy guitar! Get a nice 3" leather strap like the Levy M7GG3.

Dig! Yep, a wide leather strap is the way to go. I use Franklin straps modded to be quicklocks

Re: 1 Norlin Les Paul is enough.

So, no practical advice on how to trim a pound off an LP?

I've got a '92 Standard that needs to lose 1.5 pounds. Stop me from doing something ugly.

Dan Shins of Lay's Guitar in Ohio has a way of chambering heavy Les Pauls.

Mind you, this is a solution for players only !
The weight relief hole "purists" don't need to contact him...

If you don't want a hollow one, then you could also send it away to get a thinner body and / or have a tummy contour put in it like the Dicky Betts red top.
I don't know if that fits into the "something ugly" category for you. From a player's point of view, there's nothing that should hold you back. Heck, I've put drills on guitars that are now considered to be "vintage" because I didn't like the stock tuners or because I wanted a Bigsby on it.

On a long enough time line, every guitar becomes vintage.

All real players put aside, I think even the "purists" will have to admit there were more than a couple of Standards produced in '92 and quite similar instruments before and after that year.

That's not very entertaining IMHO. If I was watching "me" do that, I'd leave.

I'll go with Saiko's advice. (but every time I choose between this guitar and my 8 lb Studio...well....)
