Value for 1978 Gibson Les Paul Standard

Hello fellow guitar enthusiasts, I have a chance to purchase a 1978 Gibson Les Paul Standard cherry burst for $1700. The condition is decent, pretty much what you would expect from a 30+ year old guitar. There is no cracks or significant repairs done to it. Here are some other relevent details:
-it is stamped a SECOND
-new Semour Ducane Zebra Pearly Gates
-new Gibson brand pots
-new 1/4' jack
-new locking tuners
-orginal case
Overall I was impressed by it (actions, tone, sustain, look, and general playabilty)

Its this a resonable value? is the fact that parts have been replaced lower the value? I have been hard pressed to find older les pauls in my area so I give them considerable thought when I come across one. Thank you greatly in advanced for your insight/expertise!

It is expensive, try with $1500 that should be the limit because it just have the body and the paint original. If she would have T tops, she would be around $1700-$1800

I have seen that guitar on Used Regina, that`s where I live......I figured somebody would be interested in this guitar,...not someone from here(MLP) though.

(the map for the Kijiji ad, looks like the seller is right across the street from a buddy of mine,...really close anyway,...don`t panic,I have my `77 Custom)

$1700 is reasonable.

eh, I think its a little high at 1700. But still not all that bad. Personally I probably wouldn't bother with haggling or anything cuz its not THAT bad of a price. definitely a nice looking guitar though, I'm real picky about "clownbursts" but that one looks pretty awesome!

I say with these old guitars it's all about if it really sings to you. They only get older and if you keep it for years it'll only be worth more. Probably a taf bit high because of the changed parts but not bad either.

Guitar prices are weird right now with both Norlins and new in there respective models and price ranges being very similar, the old one in my eyes is a better deal in the long run.

Buy it and play the hell out it! It'll all go away after that

The body looks solid and it seem like quality parts have been added. Now this is just my opinion but the fact that it is stamped second would have no bearing to me, it's 34 years after the fact. Hope it works out for you!

Re: Value for 1978 Gibson Les Paul Standard

I sold a cherry sunburst 78' Standard a few years back for $1850 via eBay. It was all original but beat to sh!t!......I don't care for the looks of those locking tuners but to each his own! I would swap them out myself......

I almost took a drive to check out this guitar. Did you end up getting it?

Re: Value for 1978 Gibson Les Paul Standard

I can not see it as it says the ad is no longer there....but I agree that $1500-$1600. I have been shopping for these for a while and bought my 1978 Standard a couple of months ago @ $1850 and to the best of my knowledge it is all original except for one pot....and of course the Shaw pickups that were installed a year after it's purchase(info provided here, I got lucky).

Nothing against the changes but you can buy one that is "straight" for that kind of money (2K or less) if you shop and have patients....

regardless, if it plays well, enjoy it. Value is only for the buyer, not the "owner" if you know what I mean.....
