Are early 90s LP customs Norlins?
I have / had a few 80s and 90s LPCs and they've all been great. They have the "skinny-square" Gibson logo and the seemingly larger headstock (compared to later years) which Ive seen consistently in use up to 92-93. Aside from the pick ups changing over the years, the necks and carves (and everything else) seems to be the same even though pedantically I understand they were Norlins up to 86-87ish.
So just out of curiosity, do you think the 90s LPCs are essentially Norlins or are there other differences I'm missing? |

Re: Are early 90s LP customs Norlins?
No. But this wasn't my question or the same scenario. My question, and maybe it wasn't clear, was if the LPC from the post-Norlin era up to the early 90s was the same as the early-mid 80s Norlin LPCs, since IME the headstock, neck and carve seem the same. Or are there other differences, aside from varying pickups? Not an important question - just conversation.

No. One they have a 3 piece mahogany neck not 5 piece maple. No volute and they used a little better wood in the custom shop. They are still heavy but not as heavy as most norlins. On and no pancake bodies.

Re: Are early 90s LP customs Norlins?
I thought the pancake bodies were gone about '76-'77 and the maple necks were gone by about '82. I'm asking about differences between roughly '83 and early 90s LPCs aside from pickups. Thanks.

No, but I see where you're coming from. It took a few years for HJ to distance the brand from the Norlincide features. I've seen very late 80s LPCs with 3 pc tops but it seems to be a very heavy transitional period. I won't say much more for fear of looking as stupid as that dude.

Answer: No, they are 'Henry's'.

Re: Are early 90s LP customs Norlins?
Technically, no. By features, pretty much. They didn't change that much until the early to mid 90's from what I've seen. My '88 Standard is practically a Norlin by construction and finish. The year is practally the only difference as are the pups.
