Arm Rester for Lester?

Howdy! Anyone out there ever try one of those banjo armrests to soften that Les Paul knife-edge into the forearm? Seems a lot more reversible than actually committing to a forearm cut, which would instantly crater any resale value and may wind up looking like scrap wood.
Maybe something like this could be modified?:

Re: Arm Rester for Lester?

There's plenty out there for acoustics, too. Some that do not hurt the guitar's finish. Maybe one of those would work. I've got a Custom Shop guitar that has a very sharp edge. Something like that would come in handy.

Here is one of a different style on a Mary Ford Goldtop. Although I find it a bit gaudy it does go with the pickguard.

Re: Arm Rester for Lester?

I've never noticed the edge but then again, I don't have large fore-arms. I notice that most older goldtops are worn in that spot...haha, I kind of like the wear though.

Gaudy but effective. That's a version I hadn't envisioned, and thanks for broadening my imagination there. On my tobacco sunburst, a black version would look pretty OK, maybe.

Look at my avatar pic: a black version of this armguard on my tobacco 'burst wouldn't even be that noticeable to a casual observer. Having said that, I think I like the banjo rest idea a little better, as there is ample precedent for attachinging curvaceous chunks of chrome (or nickel) onto our 'Pauls (e.g. Bigsby).

Re: Arm Rester for Lester?

Hey Tim! Say what? Drill holes in your LP? My head is spinning a little bit! Let me hold on to something... I just can't imagine that! May I suggest the velcro with glue on the backside? That way if you decide to revert to a non "armrest" version, all you have to do is use a little thinner (one that would not damage the finish, lighter fluid would do I would think) to remove the glue and "Voilà!", no more armrest and NO HOLES!!! Please don't hurt your Paul!

A fine idea, Bobby. I've never drilled a hole in this thing (OK, the previous owner installed Grovers, but I put the Gibbys back on) and so far all my mods have been reversible, so it'd be a shame to take out the drill. Maybe double-sided tape would do the trick, too?

Double sided tape, yes! I'm risking this: Preferably some that has been used to hold a braless dress in place. More mojo...

I guess I just haven't found the edge to be uncomfortable enough to need something like that.

I own a few LP's, but only one has a sharp enough edge to bug me & that's my '08 Spotlight prototype. It's a custom shop guitar and has a very squared off edge on the binding, and a very flat recurve. Don't know if it's because it's a prototype and they didn't pay close attention to the details (it also has some clearcoat pulling away in a couple of places). But on my Norlins, their binding has a more rounded, finished feel on the corners. I wonder if they use a scraper to take that down, or if it's molded into the binding stock?

That can be a bit of a drag, certainly, but the forearm thing is the bigger problem for me as I have a history of (medical jargon alert!) "median-nerve entrapment."

For this same reason, I cannot wear a wrist watch even though they're much more convenient than having to look at my damned cell phone to check the time.

Haha, just jokes.

I was going to reply something semi-sensible like, "If your guitar is digging into your chest lengthen your strap and lower your guitar."

Seriously though, God bless the nipple surfers. If you need it that high, do yourself a favour and sit the fvck down to play, lol.

Just to be clear, I practice within the proper tolerances of nip to tip clearence as stated by Bartholamew & McBoob in their timeless classic: "Wood & Nipples - Guitar Secrets Of The Pros" + I'll have you know my moobs are pert and well-shaped tyvm
