'77 Standard. Green?

I stumbled upon this 1977 Les Paul Standard for sale locally and it caught my eye. I recently just traded off a '75 deluxe and kind of regret it now. Nice playing and sounding guitars. I just need to know some info about this green finish. In the ad it says its factory finish. Is it really a factory finish, how rare is this and if it's all original, how much is it worth?

I've never see a Norlin factory-finished like that, but I'm no expert.

+1

Maybe it was pelham blue that faded?

I have seen quite a few old gibsons that look like that that were once pelham blue.

But still, this finish does look perfect, like it was a refin or special order color guitar that never got played...

Hmm.. I can see how it could have been pelham blue. If you look where the neck and body connect, along the edge it looks to be blue? But I'm also looking at the tuners and the back of the neck and it looks super clean to be original..

Re: '77 Standard. Green?

I've never seen Pelham translucent, and I'm not sure Pelham was offered then, but I'm out of my depth here. Hot-Brit or ProgRocker111 would know better than I.

For what it's worth, I think it's a refin or factory-custom.

I know there's a Gecko-burst but I think it had more of a yellow center.

Re: '77 Standard. Green?

Heres some info from the seller:

I've had it for about a year, got it from a guy with devil wears prada.
I put a Paul callum steel abr bridge to replace the crappy Nashville one.
It also has the bridge pickup coiltapped, but that was there before.
It weighs a ton and has a really good bookmatched top for one from the seventies.
A great player for sure, I'm just financing a custom. :-)

Actually, the finish is original, verifed by Gibson and [local music store]
The bridge when I pulled it off was actually already a replacement but remember this is a player, not so much investment. LOL. You are getting a 300 dollar upgrade bridge, even over new Gibson quality.

He has the original chainsaw case but says he has no pics and it is beat up. Probably why its in a different case now. Any ideas on value?

Have him take some more close-up pics and a few pics of the original protector case. Is he offering the original protector case with it?

Re: '77 Standard. Green?

The rings and pick guard are not original, nor are the back cover plates. The rings and gaurd should be cream, the back plates should be brown. I don't know about the color, but something about it makes me think it's original.

Re: '77 Standard. Green?

The serial is right for a 77....
This quote is taken right from the Norlin ID:
In 1977, Gibson first introduced the serialization method that is in practice today. This updated system
utilizes an impressed eight digit numbering scheme that covers both serializing and dating functions.

get a shot of the neck pockets too without pups in, those usually reveal little secrets.

Re: '77 Standard. Green?

I'll look into getting more pictures. The price on his ad is $2400 obo but the current price is $1800 CAD (trying to get him down more) with the original case as well as a new case (I think just a generic LP case). How does this sound considering the info I already have?

Re: '77 Standard. Green?

it has been modified many of the parts have been changed, not many original parts on it if any, pickups are most likely changed with split coil option, I believe this is a refinished guitar looks like the serial number was restamped, we need more photos with better detail including inside the control cavity with close up of the pots and the pickup routs, plus underside of the pickups to give you a more accurate evaluation of the guitar, if the guitar was all original it would be worth $2500 but modified will be worth less, so once we get more detailed photos I will be able to give you a valuation in present condition.

What an oddball guitar. Kinda like it. Could be a nice companion to a 'snot burst'.

Re: '77 Standard. Green?

This guitar was a burgundy les paul standard/deluxe. a 77 model...there WAS a made in USA imprint..you can still see the faint remains of the word "in" between the top 2 klusons (which are the wrong tuners for that era). The serial number was too deep and not sanded off...thats why you still see the original color indented in the numbers.
color is NOT original nor is any of the hardware or even the backplates.
As far as Gibson verifying anything...they are a joke and dont know shit. A friend of mine was informed he had a 1970's 60' reissue by one of Gibsons people...what a joke.
That color there didnt happen..this was a darker guitar.
Im pretty sure this guitar was wine red.

Alright, well I guess I'm an idiot, not looking to see that this post was already here, before reposting pretty much the exact same thing. My bad!

Apparently it was actually a tobacco burst, refinished by whoever.
Oh well, thought it was original, but I know nothing ;) still plays awesome!

This makes sense. Thanks for the reply! I asked for more pics, the guy said he would send them on the weekend and its almost halfway through the week now.. I'm not really expecting to hear back or buy this guitar anymore.. On the weekend I broke the headstock on my LP Custom. I'm still a little sick at the thought of it. Dropped it off (not literally this time..) at a really good guitar tech today and says it should be ready in about a week. It's a real shame. Part of me is okay with it because its fixable but at the same time I'm huge on resale value as I buy and sell gear a lot and now this thing has lost a ton of value. Oh well!

Sorry man, I lost your email. Had a bad phone weekend. As you can probably see from the posts above though, it's not original I guess.. Oh well.
If you are still interested, email me again, I'll respond back. Maybe I'll take that custom in trade? LOL

Anyone have any ideas what kind of pickups these could be? All I really know is the bridge is coil tapped and they both say Gibson USA!
