Beautiful guitar!!!

Are you sure it's a 72? Usually they have Gibson embossed pickups. Not always I'm guessing, but usually.

Thanks man! Pretty sure it is. The serial is in the right range and the pots are very early 72. But the pegs were changed to schallers, graph tech saddles put in and the pups seem very hot for minis, so its possible the pups are not original. I don't think all 72's came with embossed pups, but I'm sure someone here can shed some more light on the subject.

Like I said, probably not all. It's just usual. Gorgeous guitar nonetheless.

A true beauty!!!!
Congratulations!!!
Not all 72 had the embossed covers, but most did, post picture of underside of the pups and we can see if they are original.

Re: NGD 1972 Les Paul Deluxe

It's hard to date early 70s deluxes with any certainty. The serial number and the pot codes (provided pots are original) are two bits of evidence that can lead to one being fairly certain of the year. Posters above are correct, not all 72s came with the embossed pickups.

That aside, sweet guitar. Hope you enjoy her for many years to come!

Very nice looking guitar and glad it worked out for you.

Looking forward to hearing how you like the sound of it.

I'm definitely not an expert, but if the pots are early '72, it's possible yours is pre-embossed covers. Changes didn't usually occur exactly when the calendar did.

the date on the pots is the date pots were manufactured and not the date the guitar was manufactured, there is a lag time, which is the difference between the time pots were manufactured and the time Gibson used them in a guitar, this lag time can be any were from two months to over a year, so the date on the pots can not be used to accurately date a Gibson guitar.

Re: NGD 1972 Les Paul Deluxe

Thanks for all the comments! Yeah she's got a ton of mojo, used her last night at practice, plays and sounds killer! Used a marshall bluesbreaker with a marshall 4X12, a cusack screamer and an old 70's morley wah-volume (yup the huge old chrome colored ones) and the tone sounded like a heavier version of Robbos sound from Live & Dangerous. I always thought Robbo used the black custom on that album but have heard that he used a deluxe on that too..? I haven't even so much as changed the strings. Will deff post some pics of the bottom of the pups when I change the strings. This ones deff a keeper!!!

Really? I seriously doubt that it would ever take a year, or anything close to it.
By your dating methods, this '72 may have left the plant in early '73. BS

That's why I said it was one piece of evidence that could help date the guitar -- never said it was an absolute method. Believe I kicked off my post saying how hard they are to date....

Must be nice to be the only one with the 'facts'. How could you possibly know how many pots were ordered, held in inventory, then installed, or the time frame that it all happened in?

Well, if you look at the pot codes in my 1980 Standard, they are made on the 27th week of 1979. The original pickups are dated May 1980. There you have it....10-11 months.

HotBrit has a big collection of gibsons and I've found him to be extremely accurate. There are some people you take with a grain, Hot Brit's not one of them when he's talking Gibson.

just sharing with you from my experience, we are all here to share and learn from each other more about the Les Paul's that we love, I have owned a lot of Noirlin era Gibson guitars over the years, so have had the chance to notice some details and gather some knowledge about them, you can accept my comments or disregard them it is entirely up to you, I do not want to force any thing on you, but the information on dating by the pots and the lag time involved is based on fact.

Re: NGD 1972 Les Paul Deluxe - Update

First off wanna thank everyone for their comments and help. So here's the logic I used to date the guit: the serial is in the the 700000 range combined with the early 72 pot dates led me to believe the guit was a 72, which would make no difference to me if she were a 73.
Here's the update: I was put in touch with the previous owner (not the shop where I bought her) and asked about the pups. He told me that he has the original embossed pups and that he did not like the way they looked so he simply took them out and that he replaced them with early 70's minis (he claims to be the original owner). He is also willing to sell or trade the original pups to me. I luv the sound of the minis that are in her and prob would not change them unless the embossed blew them away, but I do want the originals just to have them. So what are they worth, is there anything I should be looking for? Thanks again....sorry for the long post!

That's gonna be tough right now. Maybe I can strike up a trade and put on my poker face. I also found these on gbase

Is there anything else different about these pups other than the cover?
