What we call it
I think much of the misconception that comes with Norlin era Les Pauls is what even the lovers of them call it.
Recently I have started calling them Norlin era Gibson Les Pauls. People kinda get the idea (or so I've noticed) that these guitars aren't Gibson. So often it kinda seems that people are under the misconception that Norlin is the brand name and not just the owner name. If that's the case, I never hear owners of more modern Les Pauls call their Les Pauls as Henry Les Pauls. I know it's a little more work, but I'm thinking we should refer to our guitars as either Gibson Les Pauls or even more accurate Norlin era Gibson Les Pauls.

Re: What we call it
I've actually seen on here people not knowing because it doesn't say Norlin on their guitars.

Re: What we call it
I don't care what anyone else thinks of my guitars. Mine get called "the Gibby", t"the Epi", "the Tak", and so on. The only people who care are in guitar forums, and their opinion is worth every penny I've paid for it.

Re: What we call it
Funny, I see almost daily someone calling Norlin era Les Pauls as Norlin LP's and/or Norlins.

Re: What we call it
(Newer) vintage Les Pauls.
End of. The different eras are pretty made up and mean nothing. If I want a 50's guitar, I will ask for a 50's guitar, same for 60 or 70 or 80 or whatever........... |

Re: What we call it
I sometimes refer to mine as a Norlin, but only here, where people might know the difference (and it is just a matter of the "time frame" or "era" when it was made). It's no different from referring to a Fender as pre CBS, CBS, and post CBS or a Gretsch as pre Baldwin or Baldwin etc.

Re: What we call it
Still not as many as "Pre-CBS Fender Stratocaster".
![]() Anyway, a Gibson LP, is a Gibson LP, no matter when it was made. But, IMHO, there's nothing necessarily wrong with calling '70s-early '80s-era Gibson guitars "Norlin-era" guitars, because no matter what, guitars produced during those particular years are very different from the respective pre/post eras. Not that, that's a bad thing?

Re: What we call it
My point still is, we AREN'T referring to our guitars as Gibson here. People here say they call their guitars Gibsons, but it just isn't the case. This is why I am saying we call our guitars Gibson. If you want to stop saying Norlin, that is even better. Seriously, I think I can find a post from everyone here where they refer to their guitar as a Norlin, leaving Gibson out entirely.

Re: What we call it
But really, how many people on here are confused that they aren't Gibsons?
I'm GLAD we have a Norlin section on here, I think it's the only one on the net. And I think this forum is helping to dispel the negative myths we've lived with for so long.

Re: What we call it
I'm thinking quite a few. Hell, there is even a thread titled, Norlin Years vs. Gibson.

Re: What we call it
Yet I'd never heard of those myths before this particular forum... Every guitar shop, every vintage shop, every person I'd talk to, none of them have ever used this term. I've always had 1. Kalamazoo Gibbys 2. Nashville Gibbys ... You can call the Kalamazoo era as vintage, whatever, but it is the ERA for me, no matter if it's 1970's or 1960's... I wonder if in like 10 years time some of the Gibsons made now will be referred to as coming from the Baked Maple Era... or something useless like that.
