By how much does a headstock break lower the value of a Norlin?
Buddy has a late 70's Norlin Custom that he is thinking of selling. Its's a player with pretty much all stock parts save for knobs, switch tip etc.
Had a headstock break at one point and it was professionally repaired. How much do you feel it reduces the value? |

I'm thinking at least half.

Pics, please. The aesthetics of the repair count. How much (if anything) was oversprayed, and is the original serial number still intact or covered by the repair? Remember, every collector of note owns at least one pre-1980 guitar with a headstock repair. After you buy your first, there is no turning back. These can be great deals.

all depends on the type of break and the quality, both structurally and cosmetically, of the repair. My guess is that if the repair is well done your buddy may get about 50-60% of what a typical Norlin Custom may go for. Pic may help the real experts on here get you a better idea of value.

Re: By how much does a headstock break lower the value of a Norlin?
I think it also depends on the rarity and value of the guitar to begin with. For a "normal" LP, it drops the value to between half and two-thirds, relatively speaking. My Spotlight Special has a repaired headstock break. Does it drop the value in half? I'm not that sure. Because it is a very rare guitar to begin with, maybe not. Of course, it's not worth as much as the same guitar without a repair. I suppose the only way I'll really find out is if I ever decide to sell it...

One other thing to consider. There are lots of people who don't want to buy a guitar with a repaired headstock (like me). So, even if you drop the price to a reasonable amount, your buddy may still have a hard time selling the guitar regardless.

Not a Norlin, but an example how the value decreases when the words "headstock" and "crack" appear in the same sentence.
1995 Gibson Les Paul Custom

Re: By how much does a headstock break lower the value of a Norlin?
I just sold a 03 custom with a 400 very well done, best I've ever seen head stock repair, close to the post above. I got 1500 for it, I think I could have gotten 2200 if the headstock wasn't broken. If you are talking a visible repair or one that wasn't done properly 700-1000 for a Norlan if its in very good condition all original you could add a few hundred

Re: By how much does a headstock break lower the value of a Norlin?
My beloved 1990 wine red standard suffered a headstock break at the hands of my wee girl !!! Took it to noted guitar maker Jimmy Moon in Glasgow , £220 repair totally invisible , and i mean undetectable , so much so it could be passed off to an unsuspecting buyer as not damaged. I still look at the area where repaired and its astounding !!! , granted it probably helps that the back of the neck is a painted finish and not as see through as many guitars. Regardless , much as i think the guitar is stronger than it once was and plays like a dream , i wouldn't buy it myself off somebody unless it was greatly reduced !!

To me it looks like someone added waffle backs and did a bad job of it. In any event, 73 LPC without any break range from $3500-$5000.
