Also, anyone know why they started using the pancake body? I understand the 3 piece neck and volute for strengthening the neck, but why the multi-piece body? The only explanation I've ever heard is that it increased the weight and the thinking was that would increase the sustain.
Lets see it!

The crossbanding (pancake) was done to "strengthen the body , to prevent cracking and checking. Its standard practice in the furniture industry..." (50 Years Of The Gibson Les Paul). It was too expensive to produce that way, and people complained about shrinkage at the pancake seams, so it was discontinued.

Re: Norlins Unite!

Thanks for clearing that up, I've seen one that started to separate it looked pretty nasty, South Texas humidity can be killer.

I don't own a camera, but I have an old picture.

I'm a small guy 125lbs on a good day, and it kills my back and shoulder, but it's become my go to guitar when gigging and recording.

Thank you!

I'm still trying to do it justice.

Is there a general viewpoint on the audio characteristics of the humbuckers fitted during that period?

Re: Norlins Unite!

On the Custom? I think its just the photo angles. You can see the slant on the 2nd photo pretty well.

It should have come with T-Tops..
I think they are a bit bright(Brittle-if that makes sense), but I kept them in my 79 KM standard for AC-DC tunes.. I feel they hit the Angus Young sound real well..

Hands down, it plays better than any of my historics.. As a matter a fact, Im considering selling them all off in favor for the Norlins... the last 4 Norlins I bought have been spectacular in the way they play, feel and look for that matter.
Thanks man! It's pretty good, the seams are hard to see at certain angles. The natural finish has aged to almost look butterscotch under the lights...

WB's are going to be soon, I hope. This has been a tough year for me cash wise, but I gotta birthday coming up... Gotta get myself something! I usually buy a new Lester every year for my bday, but this year pickups will do just fine!

Lovin' the natural beauties! I want another one badly. Maybe a Standard, or even one of the reissue natural Custom's Gibby put out last year. $5500 is crazy though.

Funny thing is nowadays people pay to have em looked checked and abused.

I never met a pancake I didn't like, but damn they are heavy.

A guy I know is selling his '73 burst Custom on Craigslist right now.

He wants $4k and it has Zbuckers in it, but all the original parts as well. It's a damn nice Les Paul. I'd take it if I had the cash, and if he and I were on good terms right now. My fault... I was jamming with them as their new lead singer, wasn't overly into it, but then an emergency came up and I had to fly out of town super short notice, left my phone in Calgary, missed about 2000 calls from those guys. I felt bad, they were a good band, and great guys but it was also the worst thing I ever had to go through in my life *so far*

Re: Norlins Unite!

That Natural Custom is very cool - you don't see them around that often. Did you sand it down, or is it stock?

If you're talking about mine, it's been that way since I've had it, but God only knows what it's gone through over the years. It's a heavy tonemaker though.

There is a 78 (I think) Natural Standard in the Auction (Ebay). It is pretty sweet. Has new hardware and I'm not sure if the original HW comes with. $1999 buy it now,

Pushead - those are all beautiful - I really like the white Custom (although I'd take it back to stock!).

What happened with the 12th fret inlay on the ''randy'' custom?

Re: Norlins Unite!

not all '74s had the inlay (mine doesn't) - I'm not sure what percentage had it, ie, were most made with it or without it?

Totally stock! When they do it now they call it 'antique natural'. I love the look of a natural top guitar.
