20th Anniversary Custom Collection

I've noticed there are quite a few around on this site, so let's see them altogether! Here's a little history first.....

20th Anniversary Les Paul Custom
In 1974, Gibson celebrated 20 years since the first Les Paul Custom had appeared by issuing a Custom with a Twentieth Anniversary inlay at the 15th fret, in place of the normal blank position marker. This was Gibson's first anniversary model, and it proved to be very successful. It is clear that this guitar established a marketing trend for other anniversary models to follow.

The 20th anniversary Les Paul Custom is typical of an early 70's Norlin model. It has a pancake (3 piece) body, gold hardware, volute, witch hat knobs, ABR-1 bridge, ebony fretboard, 3-piece mahogany neck, thin binding in the cutaway, 6 digit serial number, and "Made in USA" stamp on the back of the headstock. The 20th anniversary models were made in Kalamazoo.

Here is mine. It was already heavily customised when I bought it over 20 years ago (I think I paid 350 or something similar). It has cream plastics (I guess, to go with DiMarzio Super Distortions it has); graphite nut. Hardware seems to be original, including waffle back tuners.

Nice. I played one in a shop last year - they wanted 9 or 10 grand for it!!!

Re: 20th Anniversary Custom Collection

Here's mine

I Purchased this guitar new in 1975, 20th Anniversary inlay on the 15th fret, Stamped #2 above the serial number, see the blem in the finish near the neck pickup. Built to 1974 specs, 3 piece mahogany neck, transitional tenon. Lots of mods from back in the 70's to more recent but almost nothing, less the refret that couldn't be put back to stock. I kept all the original parts.

Changed waffle back tuners to gold Grover Rotomatics late '70's
Changed witchhat knobs to speed knobs late 70's
Refret to large frets late 70's
Changed black pickguard to homemade clear pickguard late 70's
Swapped out black plastics to cream and removed removed pickup selector plate in 2007
Swapped out stamped T-tops to Wagner Darkbursts in 2006, actually had the 1st generation Dimarzio mid 1970's PAF's in it in the 70's still got those too.
Swapped out pots with RS 500K pots in 2006
Swapped out caps with LUXE Bumble Bee oil/paper caps in 2007
Swapped out bridge saddles with Graphtech's in 2007
Swapped out Tailpiece and posts with lightweight nickel RS tailpiece and cold rolled steel posts in 2007
Swapped out bridge posts with stainless steel posts in 2008

Also some transitional changes that have since been removed from the guitar.
(brass nut, Leo Quan?? "Bad Ass" brass bridge.

The gold plating on the pickup covers looked bad so I removed what was left of it, that's why I opted for nickel on the tailpiece. So the guitar is kind of a hybrid some gold and some nickel on the metal.

It also sat in its case virtually un-played for about 23 years. I started to play seriously again in 2005. What was I thinking.

Here's mine. Only thing non original is the gold knobs pulled from a 70's goldtop, prefer the look to the original witch hats:

Re: 20th Anniversary Custom Collection

I promised pictures, and did take some, but they look like crap! Will try to take better ones soon.

Anyway, I want to get new tuners for my '74 Custom BB. I have been thinking about trying to find original ones in good shape on eBay, but I don't necessarily care about having vintage tuners, as long as they look right. I just want it to be a great guitar to play and use, so everything is interesting. Also been thinking about Tonepros. Suggestions?

Re: 20th Anniversary Custom Collection

Hi Folks,
Mine's a bitza; no original pups, and I had to rip a MIDI install out of it when I found it, but it has played literally thousands of gigs in the 27 years I've owned it. Still plays incredibly well. I much admire some of the guitars here though. The USA builds great guitars for sure.

Re: 20th Anniversary Custom Collection

Great pics, guys!

I had known about little variations on these models like the inlay, but some of these models are overwhelming, like the Sunburst. I had no idea that this model was ever made in Sunburst.

Keep them coming!

Wow, very original looking Norlin. Must be early 75, cause of maple neck. All 74s had mahogany.

But early 75's still had mahogany necks I thought.

I read somewhere, some early 75's still had the inlay and maple necks. This 74-75 period is very confusing, and undocumented for the most part.

Here's mine. Just got it. It's more brown and I never seen this color for a 20th anniversary model.

We Will try this again. My buddy had this stored in his barn since the 80's. He was smart enough to take off the strings.
