Precision Bass Project

Hi!

Thought I'd share my Fender Precision bass clone project with those who are interested. Its for personal pleasure and not to sell on as a fake btw.

The body is 3 piece alder and the neck is rosewood over maple. Both parts are from the Korean ESP factory. They're good quality.

The neck is satin finished though I will be respraying it in nitro celluolose. The feel of the neck is quite thin, I prefer a fat neck but it'll do for recording and the odd jam or gig etc.

The body once grainfilled, sanded and primed will be finished in olympic white nitro and aged amber tinted clear nitro lacquer.

I'll post pic's as I carry out each step of work done.

Please feel free to advise, comment, disagree or commend. Any feedback is welcome!

Cheers!

Re: Precision Bass Project

I sealed the body today with some sand sealer of all things with a brush. It just needs a wet and dry 400 grade sand tomorrow. I'll prime the body if I have time tomorrow too!

I have also lightly sanded the neck and cleaned it down. This is the preparation for the decal applied also today. I might also apply the tinted nitro lacquer tomorrow to build up on the headstock in particular.

So far, so good!

Re: Precision Bass Project

Nice project. I'll be watching this one. I would make sure that everything fits before getting too far in the finishing process, especially the neck / body joint. Sucks to have the paint chip out while drilling later.

Re: Precision Bass Project

Thanks for that Csharp I will!

Ive actually realised I dont have the neck plate yet so I won't be even priming until next weekend tops! Most people use those holes from the neck plate and attach a old piece of wood as the neck to hang up and spray etc. Im trying not to cut any corners and be patient with it. I'll try to concentrate on the neck for now.

Cheers

Re: Precision Bass Project

I've sparayed approx 300ml of the 'Tinted Amber Nitro Lacquer' periodically through today. The first problem I encountered was spraying too thick a coat. I ended up with a 'Milky' white appearance. Unfortunately I didn't take a pic. To remedy the 'Milky' look I used 1200 grade wet and dry paper (Wet) and lighty took away the surface. Below is a pic of the sanded headstock, you'll notice the decal has a 'Milky' glow. This disappeared after the next blast of lacquer :-)

[IMG][/IMG]

Since that photo I have sprayed the neck and headstock probably 8 or 10 times leaving to dry approx 20 - 30 mins.

I have purposely captured the decal surround on the next pic, you'll notice the 'bass' stands out. Im not sure how many litres (ha ha) of lacquer it will take for the decal to sink and become unnoticeable. Im not too fussed about that, its mainly just a 'relicing' experiment and also a bit of fun costing alot less than the real item. Im pleased with the 'Amber Tint'. The finish has been 1200 wet and dryed agin in prep for the last blast of lacquer coates tomorrow hence a rough wet look, thats the key for the next coat etc.

Another pic of the one above from another angle.

Lastly pics of the neck:

I reckon that so far Im happy with the appearance of my 1970's style Precision. I'll probably relic the machine heads (Not Fender). I'll post more pics tomorrow hopefully with the fret board Dr Fretted too.

When the lacquer has gone hard over a matter of weeks I will go over with a cloth and T-Cut (Car paint restorer) works a treat!!
