Re: Kauer Custom Guitars ~ WOW!

I've been starting to put some money into a little envelope tucked away in a secret location so that sometime in the future I can get another Les Paul. After seeing these Daylighters, I might have to say "screw the LP" and get one of these, left handed of course.

Re: Kauer Custom Guitars ~ WOW!

I met Doug and Steve today....really cool guys, really knowledgeable.

Lord knows I can't afford it...but I did it. I put down a deposit on a left handed Daylighter. Doug showed me a bunch of tops...I picked the darkest one. I also can't wait to see that top against a washed cherryburst!

They also played the Daylighters for me. (Steve's a helluva guitar player.) As far as tone goes...the solidbody sounds...exactly like a Les Paul. Straight up. The semi hollow had a warmer tone, not as bright...

That's the one I went with. I have to admit a sore back pushed me into the decision of getting the 7lb guitar vs. the 9 pounder.

I can also see why Will Boggs hooked up with these guys. They've got all the tools to make top of the line guitars...consistently. No trial and error on that side of it.

On a side note....the necks were just amazing on these guitars. I really was impressed. (I do get this strange feeling though that once this guitar arrives, my Gibson might be seeing a lot more case time.)

Thanks for having me over, Doug.

Re: Kauer Custom Guitars ~ WOW!

Thank YOU Scott!! It was great meeting you in person today! Don't sell yourself short, your a hell of a player too. Actually between you and Steve I didn't want even bother playing LOL

I can't believe I forgot to bring my camera home with me, lots and LOT's of neat stuff to share from the last few days.

(btw the Semi's are my absolute favorite too )

edit: reposting from another board I frequent
Quote:
Quite a few going on right now but here are a couple of stand outs:

First lefty daylighter (NOT the Sentry's, he picked out the top for his, starting today on it):

And my favorite, the first, inside carved, almost completely hollow, black limba Daylighter.

(before I sanded out the milling lines)

Body and top drilled for 5mm wood construction dowels we use.

I really need to stick a flashlight inside the body before taking more pictures, it is WAY cool. The top is about a 1/4" thick every where, bit more than your standard archtops but I wanted them to be a little on the stiff side.

Re: Kauer Custom Guitars ~ WOW!

Wow...that's going to be gorgeous!!

Hey Doug...what's the estimated weight of the full hollowbody Daylighter? (I'm sold on the semi, but I'm curious for those who might want or need a super light guitar...)

We spent a bunch of time weighing each version today (full solid, chambered, semi-hollow and full hollow) actually.

The full solid mahogany, maple cap ones will probably average around the 9lb mark.
The chambered ones are about a pound lighter in the body, so around 8lbs.
Then we weighed the Semi's, they are another pound lighter, around 7lbs. This jives with the complete solid and semi's we've built so far.

Then I weighed the full hollow, with a neck and hardware I had laying around, 6lbs even Gonna be awesome!

OH, btw, Scott your mahogany was routed out and the top glued on today. Should have the body all machined tomorrow!

6 lbs? Cripes, man, that's SG territory! I have a strat that weighs more than that!

Wow....

So the top's done??

The more I think about this guitar, the more excited I get. I really want to start gigging with it!! (IN fact, if it's done before New Year's, we'll be playing a show that day on the same Bill as Mick Martin. )

Re: Kauer Custom Guitars ~ WOW!

Btw go buy a lottery ticket, the power went out just after the cnc finished. A minute earlier and it would have plunged the bit right through the top!

Re: Kauer Custom Guitars ~ WOW!

Doesn't look like a big update but I did 15 of these things today, Im exhausted!

The neck is back cut to '59 LP specs (or should just about finish there after shaping)

Fretboard is in the clamps with maple binding gluing up. About 6 more of those to do tomorrow

Hmm....you know Cap'n, now that it's been getting cold I have been showing up with a skullcap to cover my stupid head.

Either way....I fully plan on showing up to a whole lotta gigs with that guitar. Hopefully I can play adequately to do the guitar and Doug's work justice!

BTW...Doug, those guitars are badass! Can't wait to see 'em in their next phase of completion!

PS: Is that one mine in the corner there, the lefty? I dig how she's just a bit...darker than the rest!!

Scott right now the neck specs to net at around .91 at the nut to 1" at the 12th. Should be carving it in the next couple days, its in the fretting que right now.

Sweet.

Of course, now is the time for me to raise my hand and officially claim ignorance on the neck specifications without some sort of resource or extensive measuring against a 1959 Profile neck (I could use my Studio as a reference). Personally, I really liked your Daylighter which had that neck profile on it. Lookin' forward to seein it in its next major phase!

Should be right at or about 59 specs. Just a hair thinner than what you played (.95-1.05)
