Re: Pawn Shop Finds!!!
I went to the local shop a couple days ago and didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Bunch of cheap guitars, most were priced higher than they go for new! The only remotely decent was a Dean V, but it was priced like 80 bucks more than GC sells it new. Jackasses had a First Act in there for 120 bucks!

Re: Pawn Shop Finds!!!
Nothing good around here. Overpriced crap for the most part. There is a local pawn shop with the most amazing examples of old Fenders (Jags, Jazzmasters, Mustangs, Strats, etc.) hanging way high up on the wall. They are the owner's "private collection." The only stuff that he actually sells is garbage! I guess I'd be the way way, though - I'm sure he got all of his vintage Fenders for cheap.
Billy Gibbons was in there a couple of days ago apparently (word spreads fast in a small town) and purchased an old lap steel and an old Fender amp, neither of which were out in the main part of the shop!

Re: Pawn Shop Finds!!!
I'd always wanted a Jazzmaster or Jaguar - Jazzmaster was always my #1. I got to looking at them a little more the past few weeks, and really liked the Jag's specs/look. I picked up that '65 for the same price as the USA Reissues are going for. Go figure, right? An original for the same as a reissue. It has a couple of issues (aftermarket pups for one, some routing UNDER the pickguard for two) - but I just couldn't pass that baby up! Should be here on Tuesday or so.

Re: Pawn Shop Finds!!!
SAme here. Nothing good in my pawns shops. They may get things in, but they go away before they nhit the floor. All import Epi. Samick, you know.....
They live and price from ebay, so there are no bargains any more. Had the pawn shop across the street from my store for 19 years. The only bargain I've ever gotten was a Kirby vacuum for $250..00. Oh, and a dewalt battery powered drill/ saw setup. that's been handy for over a decade. Instruments, nah, not in my neck of the woods.

Re: Pawn Shop Finds!!!
We don't have pawn shops over here. How do they operate? I understand you can pawn your stuff there and get some money, then when you've got enough cash flow again you can get your pawned stuff back. Do they have a term on that stuff so that when someone doesn't come and pick the item up again in a certain amount of time the pawnshop owner can sell it? Or is it a risk that within maybe five minutes after pawning your stuff can get sold?

I honesty like these, but they are really just a lower price version of a Chet Akins Model.

But the contruction of the 2 guitars is pretty different. The 6120 is a semi with traditional thin-wood laminate construction, like other Gretsches, 335's, etc. Despite the outside similarity, the WildKat is not made that way at all. Instead, it's a chambered solid-body made of a mahogany back, routed out, with a thick maple cap added. The WildKat is much more like a chambered LP than it is like a Gretsch. If people want a lesser-priced Atkins, they should get an Electromatic 5120. Also, the 6120/5120 is a full-size semi, the WildKat is a small-bodied one (in between an LP and a 6120/5120). Either way, it's a good introduction to setneck semi-hollows for not much dosh. |

Re: Pawn Shop Finds!!!
I found this great American Fender Jazz Bass with Maple
Neck, White Seymour Duncan Pickups and case for less than $180. It was kind of dirty and smelly,(smelled like a club) but looked new, i took it apart and gave it a thurough cleaning and polishing, and aired, it only had three strings on it but saw a beauty hiding behind the neglect, and well you can see for yourself its beautiful. Should have sold for $800 the case out, and smells like a rose. I later sold it for $650 on eBay for a quick sell.

Re: Pawn Shop Finds!!!
I picked up a very used Boogie Bodies strat in the late 90's for $120, but just for the parts. It had two late-70's Duncan humbuckers, old Grover tuners, and an extremely rare non-finetuning, anchor nut Floyd Rose with a sticker on it that said Made In Seattle. I got $250 for the Duncans, $150 for the Grovers, and $650 for the Floyd. The body and neck I threw away; I never did like anything made by Lynn Ellsworth.
Note: anytime you see an old Floyd with that sticker, it means it was made by Floyd himself in his old garage machine shop...tone & sustain out the arse. |

Re: Pawn Shop Finds!!!
No great guitar finds in pawn shops for me, but I did find a Gibson Miestero effects unit from the 60's and a mutron phaser at a yard sale. I give $10 for both! I kept the mutron and I sold the miestro last year on e bay for $1400!!! I couldn't and still cant believe it...

Re: Pawn Shop Finds!!!
I was talking to a pawn shop owner who told me that he picks through the good ones and sends them to a an auctioneer. They never make it to the floor of his shop.
With the rise in prices with guitars (now past) and all the publicity they've been getting the shop owners have wizened up.

Re: Pawn Shop Finds!!!
a bit OT, but I just scored this off of Craigs List, and being an aspiring keyboard player...
Lowrey Festival FL (the organ Garth Hudson used with the Hawks, Dylan and the Band), and a Leslie 45 (!!) cleaning, a few tubes, maybe a few caps and they will be just fine. The Leslie dates to '62, I assume the organ is the same year (they only made that model from '59 to '63). It has almost 100 tubes in the back of it. the price was good - FREE, just haul them away.
