good full hollowbodies that jazz and rock....gretsch or ?

I played a Gretsch today and I started to think....hmmm do I need a full hollowbody?

I had a hollowbody for many years but, never really played it....it seemed to take alot of strength but not the (cheap 600$) gretsch I played...

I played an epi joepass about 6 months ago and was not happy....

people who know tell me all your secrets...

Hamer makes a few nice ones but theyll be more than a gibby

budjet level would be the Artcorts. they sound OK out of the box but with a pup and pot change theyll sound great

They are not cheap but in the Hollower realm, Hamer Newports.
There are supports under the bridge but otherwise they are fully hollow.

I love mine. I got all 3 for only $300 more than I bought my Used R9 for.

I stand corrected. I was so pumped up because I just played one for the first time - a 9+ condition 60's model. It was sweet!

Yes they are wonderfull things , I like the Hammer things above , nice also , and these are a nice guitar Eastman Guitars the thinlines, they did make them with a full length block , now they are more of a full hollow thing with a block only under the bridge.

Re: good full hollowbodies that jazz and rock....gretsch or ?

I am interested in that es-125....How does it play

in the past the hollwbodies I have played or owned were not good for blues...I like a liter gaged string and abilty to bend notes....that is what made the gretsch so enjoyable because I could play nice "jazz" chords and then play a blues run...

Re: good full hollowbodies that jazz and rock....gretsch or ?

My '61 (not pictured above) plays really good. I have 10-52's on it and it bends quite easily. 11's would still be OK. Mine has a Bigsby and an ABR-1 archtop bridge in place of the wooden bridge. George Thorogood plays 125's but he uses lots of overdrive.

Full hollow for blues yes they work for the blues, T-bone as well as many others have done so. Ya must be doing something wrong Ted does well with playing rock on his full hollow byrdland also.

my fingers are small and whimpy....(also carpel tunnel issues) but, I keep coming back to that es335...it can cover so much ground...I would love to give both the PRS simi and full hollowbody a try (I played them both back in 1996 and I liked my stuff better at that time....) and I would really love to check out the hammer stuff

carpal tunnel , I suffered with that for a couple of years , gave in and got them both operated on worked great , if you got it bad IMO go for the op. it will only get worse and permenant!

ES335 or equivilent IMO best jack of all trades guitar ever created besides a tele Those Eastman I am telling ya are great. Solid hand carved tops and backs , street price 1400. with case.

But so many guitars out there hard to pick just one EH!

A friend of mine already called dibbs if I ever decide to let it go.
But, I doubt I will any time soon. It is a fantastic instrument.

thanks for the reply: I was joking of course but it is a great guitar congrats. I didn't think you would be ever letting that go , I know I wouldn't. I almost got one myself a few years ago , but couldn't come up with the cash before it sold.

Gibson 335's are nothing to sneeze at,but I think Gretsch own this category, and are true hollowbodies. They are some mighty fine guitars.White falcon,6120

Re: good full hollowbodies that jazz and rock....gretsch or ?

I own a 335, incredible guitar.
Gretsch makes some really nice hollow bodies, I've wanted a Tennessee Rose for years.
I almost bought one, but found a used Guild Starfire III. Look into them.
Around $1,000 in great condition. Get one made in Westerly RI if you can.
Better resale.

Stay away from the Chinese Gretsch stuff (Electromatics) and get the sorta real deal made in Japan.
They are extremely well-made, and the tone is one of a kind.

thanks for hipping me to the eastman...

btw..I have come to the conclusion that I do not like the gretsch electromatic...I played it again through a couple more amps and it did not make the grade (for me at least)

well...I played the casino A/Bing it with a 335...still impressed...it just played very well for a 600$ guitar but, one thing that really bothered me was the notes on the casino were not as complex as I feel like they should be...which makes it not usable for critical things...

I want to believe that it is just due to electronics but, I am afraid to make that assumption....

I want to buy it but, it looks like I should get a casino elite (1400$)...or something simular...

Re: good full hollowbodies that jazz and rock....gretsch or ?

There are some Epi versions of full hollowbodies out there with some potential...the Blues Zephyr, etc. Kid Ramos used one after he sold his ES5...it sounded pretty good with some work put in it. Likewise, you can still find full-depth Kay, Silvertones, Harmonys, etc with cutaways that make a nice platform for a blues rig.
You did say hollowbody, right?
