Hi. looking at getting a 1987 standard. Seen an old link, you have/had one almost the same. How did you get on with it? Roughly what did you pay, or sell it for if you no longer have it. Thanks for any help.

yeah, some folks, huh?? as if there's ANYTHING that doesn't sound good blasted. i could probably play neil diamond songs all day with the marshall on 10 and love it. of course i'd have to learn some neil diamond songs first.

Because of your mention of the BBs, I just spent about an hour with my Studio with the BBs (did about an hour with my '87 Standard earlier) and I gotta say, I love the way the studio plays. It is definitely more articulate than the standard but that just means I have to try to be a little less sloppy (although sloppy is bread and butter for guys like Page and Slash)...

Raising the neck pickup on the R8 did, in fact, withstand the 24-hour test of time. Now I don't know which-in-the-Hell guitar to play. Poor, poor, pitiful me.

Thanks, TD. I retired with the Wizz neck right where I wanted it. We'll see if that carries into today...

When I did my flurry of boutique comparisons, I felt that the lower output = more clarity held true in spades. Of course, output can't be measured by kOhms alone - the vU meters often tell a different story. The Phat Cats are higher output than the Wizz but are just plain different, for obvious reasons.

This would be so much easier if our ears wanted to hear the same things every day, wouldn't it? But not nearly as entertaining.

I raised the neck pickup to within a quarter's thickness of the strings. I THINK I hear a significant improvement - clearer and brighter. Does that wash with your experience?

I didn't figure you for a head case, or I wouldn't have asked.

I was hoping it might be the other way 'round, as I'd like to put covers on the Wizz Zebras in my R8 AND I'd like to get them sounding more like P-90s - especially the neck. They already are the most PAF/P-90-like hummers I've tried (and I've tried some $$$ ones), though I haven't tried the stock BB1 with no cover. I don't hold out much hope for that, though.

The more I play (better I get, I hope), train my ear, embrace my proclivities, and appreciate what a sophisticated tube amp can do, the more I look on neck humbuckers as sledge hammers when a ball peen is called for. I put the 490R back in the bridge of my '92, and that's cool. I will probably wind up putting that Phat Cat in the neck of the R8, but I'd rather use something that looked a little more "R".

Maybe I just need to play with the height a little more.

I see you're one of those who can hear a significant difference with pickup covers on/off. Between us boys, could you describe the differences?

    That's a Taylor. A few grand's worth thereof.
