Absolutely. There was briefly a great feature in Premier Guitar magazine, where a studio engineer went back and listened to the individual tracks that made up famous songs. I remember him dissecting Billion Dollar Babies for instance. I was always left with the idea that some great classic music really couldn't be duplicated live, even by the original artist.

I know Jimmy Page has recently talked about the other takes he did for the solo in "Stairway". He insists the one in the recording was the "best", but we'll never know for sure.

That Highway Star video is a perfect example of how the original artist can't duplicate his signature guitar solo live. It's still a great performance, but it just ain't what it was - unless you're there at the concert and high as a kite.

Great performances defy analysis. And are too-quickly taken for granted, if your thread and the replies thereto are any indication.

Greatness, regardless of its component origins (performer, producer, engineer, session dude, etc.) should never be taken for granted. That it is, is truly a shame.

Thanks! And no kidding... There were a couple of local guys that played standup bass in rockabilly groups when I lived in Houston. They were pretty good, but not that good.

I have a friend, and occasional musical partner that has played standup bass for about 30 years. He's great. We used to play in a germanic folk band together, but never worked out any rock tunes... Not that I can play rockabilly... That stuff is hard to do right.
