You'll get no argument from me regarding the brilliance of the lads from Liverpool. I'm no expert on them, but I am impressed. My Beatles collection consists only of Anthologies 1 and 3. Odd as it may seem, these discs were my first exposure to most of their music. Consequently, when I first heard the "official studio" version of
Hey Jude on the radio, I was shocked. I much prefer the stripped-down take on Anthology 3.
To me, one of the hallmarks of brilliance is when you can strip a song down to its essential elements and it still blows your mind. Not only that, but most of their entire catalog can be enjoyed on multiple levels. A newborn child is mesmerized by the melodies, harmonies, and tones while an older, more sophisticated person is also stimulated by thought-provoking lyrics. Where did it all come from, man? Brilliant art, to me, is like something channeled from another world. Just thinking about that really does keep me smiling. Thanks for the kind words.
