I have a wife and kids too and work as a Radiologic Technologist. Had I started when I was younger I definitely would have pursued being a Luthier. I have that book you mentioned and it is the best. I started out with a strat and took it to a Luthier at West Music. He charged me $65 for a set up so I decided I would start doing all my own adjustments after purchasing that book and a few tools. I didn't like the sound of this Mexi Strat. It sounded thin and twangy so I started upgrading it. It sounded great but with the single coils it still didn't have the growl I wanted so I sold it and got the Epi Les Paul.

If you like working on guitars you could become a guitar tech (the guts, electronics and such) or a Luthier (that's the guy who does your set ups, fret leveling etc). I have thought about learning that as well. I love messing with my guitars. There is a Luthier school near where I live. But I got a lot going on with a wife, kids and all that jazz. So for now I teach myself as I go, mainly from the guys hanging around here. Also this book is a must. Its got everything you would need for any guitar. See you around.
