With traditional 50's wiring (dependent) and the switch in the middle you can blend in either the neck or bridge pickup but if you turn down one pickup all the way to 0 it will shut the whole guitar down. This is my preferred wiring method. The independent circuit sucks tone and is rarely ever used by most players.

Greetings, not exactly sure what type of wiring you are asking for. You might try adjusting the heighth of the pickups that may help even things out.

New Humbucking Flat Pickup Ring Set Flat Bottom Chrome | eBay

They were just these generic flat metal ones.
Note that the guitar's pickup cavity did have to be routed slightly larger and the screw holes for the humbucker ring did not line up either. I had a tech do the mod for me since it was out of my own personal comfort zone.

Crazy that you found the Lollar to be darker than the stock ceramic. I found the opposite. Yes I agree that the bridge FB pickups are too Tele-like for my tastes as well. I wanted more of a normal "rock" sound for the bridge, but like the snappiness of the FB neck.
    Peace

    Hey Richard,
I just saw this message. Yes, I love my Firebird and even though I do have some inklings to mess with it more, I have to admit that this guitar is "done."

I ended up with the Lollar Firebird neck pickup and a Bare Knuckle Black Dog in the bridge. The Black Dog is, of course, a full sized humbucker with LOTS of midrange. When I switch from neck to bridge the tone changes really radically, almost like turning on a pedal. The thing is, the Black Dog is quite a bit louder (which I like) and is very bright, but still sounds and feels full. That is, when I switch to the bridge it doesn't "lose" something the way it did before (with a mini in the bridge). Also, the middle position is some kind of fantastic accident that I do not want to mess with.

I got the chrome humbucker ring on ebay for cheap. Its not quite the same footprint as the one the neck FB pickup is in, but it's close enough for my purposes.

    Good luck!
    Dave
