Now I just have to determine a decent asking price... -----Original Message----- From: Gruhn xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, August 10, 2012 11:53 AM To: Henninger, Patrick J. (Cont) Subject: RE: 1983 Gibson Les Paul Mystery wood Looks like some sort of limed mahogany, like the early Les Paul Specials (1955-56). There is also a light mahogany called primavera wood, which was used by some makers in the 1940s, but to my knowledge never by Gibson. It does not look the "korina" (African limba) wood that Gibson used on the Heritage Flying V, Moderne and Explorer reissues in 1982, although the korina look could have inspired this guitar. The carved mahogany top is highly unusual. It was the original spec on the Les Paul Custom, but from 1970 on, they used a maple top cap. The dot inlays appeared on a carved-top Les Paul in the early 1980s, on early versions of the Les Paul Studio. This could have been some sort of prototype... I don't know of anyone who was involved in Gibson production at that time to direct you to. Walter -----Original Message----- From: Henninger, Patrick J. I appreciate your help, and I have the guitar with me, so I can send any specific pictures that may further clarify. Our email systems at work have been acting up, hopefully the attachments come through. Patrick J. Re: WTS 1983 Les Paul Studio
Is that a refin? The Alder looks pretty good. Looks like a one piece maple neck too. GLWS

Seriously this isn't ebay. Just post what you want for it and be done with it. You can't charge extra for the Mojo

Re: WTS 1983 Les Paul Studio
I'm pretty sure that if you post in "Gibson Les Paul" section you could get a ball park figure as well. There is a lot of knowledgeable people there that could guide you in the right direction. You don't want the place you are taking it try and get it for less.

Re: WTS 1983 Les Paul Studio
Congrats on the sale, those original Studios are pretty cool!!
I am, however, at a loss to understand that Gruhn's "expert" is unaware the original '83 Studios bodies were made of alder. Aren't they supposed to know this shit? |

Re: WTS 1983 Les Paul Studio
I'll concede I can't tell for sure in a photograph, but it sure looks like alder to me, and I know the '83 Studios WERE alder. Nothing wrong with it, just a little confused why experts in the field would not know that.

Re: WTS 1983 Les Paul Studio
My understanding is that the "Studio" was Alder for 83-85. As for the "Studio Standard" & "Studio Custom" I'm not sure but my guess would be Mahogany/Maple.
