Sketchiest Purchase/ Sale stories!
Over time, through my local Craigslist, I have met some intersting people and bought in intersting situations including out of a car window, in the guitar center parking lot and a meth lab.
Also, I have met some intersing people and some I am still in contact with years later. I would like to hear some other intersting people and sale/ purchase situtations. So whatcha got?

Re: Sketchiest Purchase/ Sale stories!
I met a guy at a Tim Hortons parking lot, traded guitars with him and got home and the bridge pickup didn't work.
Contacted him and he told me to take it to a shop where he knew the guy and he'd pay the bill...here's a link to my rant about THAT... Limestone Music Kingston RANT

Re: Sketchiest Purchase/ Sale stories!
I've gotten good deals, no real issue.
I guess I'll define: $360 for a 1980s Firecrackle Jackson USA H/S $400 for a USA BC Rich ST-III Grey Snakeskin $80 for a USA Peavey Nitro with a Kahler 2700 (bridge alone worth the price) |

Re: Sketchiest Purchase/ Sale stories!
I traded a welder for a Twin Reverb in a parking lot in Philly, Bought a USA Strat body off a guy that had it on CL for 200 with a must sell today. I sent him an email and offerred him 50 bucks. He replied within minutes requesting to meet immediately. I walked out of my office 15 minutes later, up to his car in a parking space on the street and he handed me the body through the window, I handed him 50 bucks and he was off. Presumable to go purchase a fix. Non guitar related, I scored a brand new 55 Inch Sony LED 3D Flat Screen (2600 dollar TV) for 800 bucks off a girl who bought it two weeks earlier with her divorce settlement. Then she lost her apartment and needed money for security on a new place. I felt bad about that one.
I have been burned once. Bought a lawsuit LP to scratch a nostalgia itch. The seller said it was near perfect. I did the deal through email. When I got it the top sheet was actually seperated from the body. Lost 250 on that one.

Hey idiot, are you the same guy that buys stolen guitars off some guy in the street? Doesn't this belong in the backstage?

Re: Sketchiest Purchase/ Sale stories!
I had a guy offer a Tele in trade for my Goldtop when I was selling it, and he wouldn't send me pics or any info on said Tele until I went out and bought a digital scale and took pics of my LP on the scale showing the exact weight. Or he wanted me to take it to a post office and take a pic. And that's not all....he even wanted exact measurements taken off the neck.
I could see that if you were buying a '57 GT....but a '99 LP Classic? git yo head outta yo ass!

Re: Sketchiest Purchase/ Sale stories!
I trade a guy in Canada a crappy LP copy for an Ipod, box of random stuff, 50 bucks and a original Michael Jackson Trill album. Sadly, the package was lost in "customs" and I never got anything.
I'm more pist about not getting the Triller album then anything else!!!

Re: Sketchiest Purchase/ Sale stories!
Ok, so I'm trying to hammer out a deal on CL right and it actually reminded of another deal I had a while ago.
I had a cheapo Epi Special II listed for $80 I think it was and I met up with this guy. I told him everything about the guitar. He starts playing it and the dude can play. He starts knit-picking and asking, "why did you change the pickups?" "what's that mark from?" "will you take $70?" All I could think was, "Seriously? WTF? It's Epiphone's cheapest model and you're knit-picking and haggling?"

Re: Sketchiest Purchase/ Sale stories!
I've had two no shows on deals that were worked out over texts. Also one guy swore he could not live without my squire van Halen 1 copy that I built and had to have that day. It just so happened to be the day I was leaving for vacation. I waited and waited he finally showed. Come to find out he had no money and it was his daughter who wanted it. She had no idea who van Halen was and thought since she was good at guitar hero that her dad would buy my guitar cause it was painted pretty. He did not & almost caused me to miss a flight over a $70 guitar.

Re: Sketchiest Purchase/ Sale stories!
I've sold pedals at the Guitar Center parking lot, sold one pedal to an employee of another music store while he was working, and bought my Les Paul Custom in the Arson Investigation offices of the Oklahoma City Fire Department. And lest I forget, bought a Peavey T-60 at a Del Rancho restaurant on the way home from a canoe trip.

Re: Sketchiest Purchase/ Sale stories!
ok first I will admit i'm sure people I have done deals with would say WTF?! but first...i'm a funeral director and sometimes if I need to ship something quick and I have none I will use 2 bio hazard boxes. The one day I get a call from a guy that bought one of my guitars laugh saying "Dude?! Where the hell do you work???" noticing the inside of the box with the big red bio hazard sign :P
The most sketch I would say would be I bought a guitar in Woodbridge Va.from this 15 year old kid. When I got to his house it was pitch dark and the kid sneeked out the front door saying SHHH my dad doesn't know i'm doing this...took my money and asked that I was as quiet as possible leaving his drive way!

Re: Sketchiest Purchase/ Sale stories!
I was selling my '08 Standard a few years ago on craigslist. FennRX also had his R8 for sale at the time. I had an older guy contact me, and we talked on the phone for over an hour. He agreed to buy my guitar at $2,100, and I would drive over an hour to meet this guy that night. I emailed Fenn and told him I would take his R8 once I got the cash in hand. Later that day the old guy called and said he was having second thoughts about buying my guitar. Again, he kept me on the phone for over an hour saying he would need some time to think about it. The process repeated the next day. He agreed to meet up, then called and said he was having second thoughts. This process went on for three days straight, each day keeping me tied up on the phone for an hour.
I emailed Fenn, who was holding his R8 for me, and let him know my deal fell through. The next day, I got an email from the guy which said "I'm still interested, can you meet me tonight?" In an attempt to keep my hope alive, I agreed. Later that night I got another email from the guy which said "you know your guitar is a factory second since it was bought at Guitar Center. I'll give you $1,500 for it." I emailed the guy back and told him the price had gone up to $2,300.

Craigslist deals almost always feel like drug deals to me.

Re: Sketchiest Purchase/ Sale stories!
I got receipts, paperwork and transferred warranty with it. Even was able to register it with Sony for online content. This poor girl was just real down on her luck. That's why I felt bad about that one. Then again, her divorce settlement was 2700 bucks, and she blew it on a TV.
