Re: build #3 56 Goldtop

Thanks guys! As sick as this is going to sound...... It was kinda fun
I also know that next time I drill an input jack hole too big, I will be able to fix
it even better.

Re: build #3 56 Goldtop

My grandfather taught me that if you make a mistake then make sure the "fix" looks like it was an intentional part of the design: aesthetics or function. Either way, I think it turned out great.

Damn, Nice save on the jack hole resize !

Now i just hope my "patch" job comes out just as well. Only problem is I won't have a jack plate to cover my screw up !

Can you see the screw up in the cut away?
Yup, I forgot that the binding channel get cut AFTER the top is contoured !

Thank god it dawned on me before i did the entire cutaway

I've gotten a little further. I've gotten the neck roughed out, the inlays in the braz and am finishing up the binding. On this one I am going after the "refretted" look, so I'll do the frets over the binding.

I also got commissioned to build a guitar for a friends daughters. So unfortunately mine will go on the back burner for now. It would be nice to be able to spray both at the same time. We'll see.

Thanks! Complacency after a couple successful builds is trying to get me around every corner And when I do get some time to work on a guitar, I have to try and keep myself from racing through procedures.

Good thing you caught the binding route before you got all the way through,
shouldn't be quite as bad. I'm sure you'll sneak out of it successfully

I have followed your sg builds with great envy, I would love to build one for myself someday. It's on the list, ha-ha........ thanks for checking the thread out.

Re: build #3 56 Goldtop

Here you go Lou.....

These two pictures show the template I used. I started with around 7 degrees if I remember correctly. I ended up "tweaking it" and I'm not sure off hand
what I ended up with. I made it to use with a 3/4" bushing and 1/2" bit.

I drilled 1/16" holes where the pots go. Then used tooth picks to figure my depth and angle. I used the carpenters and regular pencil to help center up my jig and double check my cutting depth. I messed around lining it up and second guessing myself for a day before I got brave enough to pull the trigger on the router.

This is the bit I ended up using with a 3/4" bushing. Fletch helped me find it.

I think Preeb's thread pretty much sums it up though.

Re: build #3 56 Goldtop

I wish I had some updates. Sorry I don't. It's on the back burner currently.
A friend of mine commissioned me, well, he's paying for the parts anyway, to build a guitar for his daughters. He had enough confidence in my other builds to go for it. It is chambered with the normal Les Paul stuff. No aging though. Bright shiny nickel, and a nice cherry burst. Haven't come up with the name on the headstock yet, something that ties in with his girls. If he likes it,
hopefully I get a modest donation for the guitar building fund

That will not work.

That is a drill bit and not made to cut with it's sides and will burn up quickly.

Additionally the router speed is much faster than a drill and the bit is not designed for that speed. If the bit is not EXACTLY the same size as the collet, it could fly out and cause injury.

Use the proper router bit please!

As for the bit, as MRJ5 said, bad idea. Those twist drill bits don't have the tolerance for the rpm of a router. I'm afraid it would sail out and do some serious damage to your guitar and possibly even you. If it did stay in the collet, you probably wouldn't see what you are doing through all the smoldering wood.

Re: build #3 56 Goldtop

Seriously.

Don't put anything but a router bit in a router! 20,000 RPMs are no joke.

I'm certain you can get a router bit in Argentina somewhere.

It was actually for both his daughters. I hope they start
arguing over it enough that I am forced to build another.
