Re: Royalite Binding

Okay, I spent some time making the site a bit more user friendly. Cart option on all items, fretboards now available, and links to the home screen on each page.

Thanks to everyone who has ordered the binding already!

Re: Royalite Binding

Hey Tom!

I ordered some of the royalite binding too, but I have a question can you dissolve bits of this material in a glass with acetone to make the so called binding glue?

P.S. You are doing great work!!! Speaking just for me and probably alot of other begining builders, we all have learned a wealth of knowledge from you and magnus!!!
Thanks,
J. M.

Re: Royalite Binding

Not sure if it melts in acetone as I don't use that method. I use superglue.
If I can remember I'll try it out when get back to the shop and report back.

That would be great to know.

Will the 8 feet be enough for two bodies if I use different neck binding?

Re: Royalite Binding

okay, I just tried it out - it does melt in Acetone.
Not sure on the length thing Expo, you'll have to measure yourself as I don't have a body here at the moment.

Great info with the acetone.

My feets are to big IŽll try to convert it. Is ist one piece exactly 8 feet long?

8 feet = 243,84 cm = 96"

if you need 53" per body (as fletch said) it is to short..hmm
I measure myself...I think its to short for two bodys.

thanks

Yes, 96" long. I don't think it'll work for two bodies.

Now I remember. I didn't order at the time because I had to try and figure out how much I needed...given my unusual size requirements. And then I forgot about it.

Do you still have some available?

Thanks!

Frank

Re: Royalite Binding

thanks decoy, I'm excited about it. I've already done 3 bodies with it, and it is very easy to work with. The trick is to use a heat gun to soften it up.
This stuff is specifically used for thermoforming into plastic parts, so it responds to heat very well. Once it's pliable, just lay it around the horn and cutaway and in a few seconds it hardens back up and stays exactly where you put it. Pretty amazing really how well it works.

Re: Royalite Binding

oh, and it melts in acetone nicely too, making a very good glue/filler.

That would make sense that its easier to work with then the new plastics. I can't see the kalamazoo guys fighting with binding in the 50's if it molds easier you could see why they would use that material.

Quick question Tom.

This "Royalite" plastic is Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and was only used in the top binding during the 50's, right?
Then, in the fretboard, Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB) binding was used.

Or is it all "Royalite"? Sorry if this has been asked already.
