Ivoroid Binding
Has anybody here used Ivoroid binding? I know the stuff at LMI costs a fortune to ship because of hazmat restrictions. Has anybody used the stuff Grizzly has? They call it Ivoroid, but as far as I can tell there's no big fee to ship it. I'm considering getting some, but I don't want to waste money on something that's not any good.

Re: Ivoroid Binding
What do you mean by 'not good' I'm sure it's fine, but not made from material that is flammable, thus no up charge for shipping.
If you're after historically accurate binding, neither are any good for replicating the 50's Gibson binding, because they are ivoroid, which is different from ivory coloured bindning. |

Re: Ivoroid Binding
Thanks alk-3, I'm not after anything historically accurate. I'm considering using it for a build I'm going to do. What I mean by 'not good', is that I don't want to get something that is supposed to look like the real thing, but ends up looking nothing at all like what it's supposed too. Does that even make any sense?

Re: Ivoroid Binding
LMII ivoroid is very high quality binding. You have a choice of one side in ivory color with "grain." The other side is white with "grain." I buy lots of it to ease the pain. Martin's Boltaron is another quality binding-celluloid-but they are not surcharging yet. The cream that Tom and Scott arranged for me to get out of Canada is good for replica effect. makes a great acetone self-glue , bends around the horn with minimal warming-has a warm color. Edges are nice as well. I have purchased same or similar from Allparts-same qualities-very economical.
I have done DJ's BFG upgrade with Ivoroid-nice cream black white, doubled up on the body and singled on the fretboard-we were not going replica-we were dressing up a plain gibby that sometimes reveals a very classy grain, as did DJ's. I had just reported to DJ that I had to take two runs at the horn--warmed it a bit too much and it stretched like bubble gum. Luckily this is a procedure that allows nearly infinite do-overs. So, I had to do a second complete body bind-but only the inner sandwich as it was the app that went silly putty on me.Ole'Exhausted Defender of the Most Vile Criminal[child sex abuse], Lefty--but who is likely to be paid for it as I was in the better days.I barked so hard at our judge today on an objection hearing, that I was thinking of declaring my size for the orange jumpsuit. Scholarly but zealous trial work is my trademark-And he was about to punch my contempt ticket. Among other things he ruled that a parent or other adult who has dealt with 11 year through around 14 years of age is not qualified to testify about the emotional up rockets and down crashes of the adolescent child-a shrink was required-a so-called expert. Among other things I pointed out, sarcastically, that none of us got to adulthood without being able to reflect back on hormone hell-it was the "ridiculously ignorant" and "Prosecution favoritism" comment that nearly got me in the pokey. He didn''t quite say, but the steam from both ears was a hint that perhaps I should go out of the courtroom and get a drink(unfortunately he meant water-because a couple "burn all the way down shots of cheap tequila" were more what I had in mind.Fortunately we recessed for the evening---"Saved by the Bell"

Re: Ivoroid Binding
C.F. Martin sells it and it is very good stuff. I need to order an ivoroid end piece for a 0028 koa but the min order these days is $50 I think. Most of the parts that they sell, I make myself nowadays so I can't put together any kind of an order.
https://www.martinguitar.com/1833/ca...Guitar%20Parts I would go with Ol' Lefty's suggestion but I built the guitar using Martin binding and I need it to match. As far as the cream that Ol'Lefty mentioned, I got a butt load from all parts after getting a sample because it was the best looking stuff that I could find readily available. |

Re: Ivoroid Binding
You might give John Hall a call at Blues Creek Guitars. I'm pretty sure he stocks Ivroid binding. I've bought lot's of acoustic supplies from him. He's a former Martin employee who's ventured out on his own! A wealth of info to be had from him...& very fair as well!
