Resurrection of a Duane Allman guitar.

Awright, here's the deal.

This guitar is a 1962 SG/LP that Duane used in the late 60s. He broke the neck off and the repair was done poorly, so he gave it to a roadie. The roadie recently passed away, and left the guitar to a good friend of mine, who is the roadie's cousin. While in the roadie's possession, the guitar was modified a bunch, so prepare yourself for a flashback.

The neck joint had been buggered to hell, and there isn't much wood to start with, so they tried to fit a plate to the back, like on a Strat. Bad idea.

Nasty.

We ended up creating a whole new neck joint, pics to come later when I have time.

So here is Duane's 62 SG/LP Standard that he gave away as a wreck in the hippy days, resurrected.

I played it Friday night, and it is AMAZING. Video was shot, so we'll get to that. The case is a pebbled back/yellow lined Custom case, and it still has a bunch of early 70's stuff like a hand painted Dead t-shirt and some other goofy hippy stuff in it.

So, there you have it. I photographed the whole process, watch for a Bench Report when I get time.

Great job Greg, that is a beautiful guitar, man, just to know Duanne played it has to give you a great feeling playing it!

Cool. Nice work, mang. Unique piece of instrument there, especially with those odd inlays.

Re: Resurrection of a Duane Allman guitar.

I have been told that it was the late 60's. My memory isn't what it was......

I have altered the first post. The second repair attempt was in the early 70's, so that's where I got cornfuzzled.

Re: Resurrection of a Duane Allman guitar.

Wow, that's awesome! I'd love to see Gibson (or someone else) replicate that guitar. And I can't wait to see all the repair details. Are those designs on the body made of brass? And is it actually inlaid, or is it adhered to the top of the guitar?

Re: Resurrection of a Duane Allman guitar.

They are brass, inlaid into the face of the guitar.

Greg gets to play with all the cool toys!!!

Boy, there really isn't much wood to those early SG neck joints at all, is there? No wonder they redesigned them.

Re: Resurrection of a Duane Allman guitar.

I don't use the word MOJO much but if you look it up in the Ol' Funk and Wagnell, that guitar has got to define it!

Very cool guitar and great job as usual on the repair Greg.

I am in line to see the bench highlights as well.

I am sure Duane is smiling. Simply outstanding!

Re: Resurrection of a Duane Allman guitar.

Awesome post, I'm extremely jealous.

this is a snippet of a story I found online from these folks who went to the R&R hall of fame and viewed the Duane guitars they have there.

"Duane’s 1962 Les Paul/SG. That was the guitar he used for slide. I was not expecting that. The SG was given to Gerry Groom after Duane’s death, per Duane’s own request made way before his passing. After Gerry’s death, the family sold it to Graham Nash’s wife, who gave it to Graham as a birthday present. He in turn has loaned it to the Hall of Fame for people like me to see. I stood there for at least 10 minutes soaking all of this in."

you aren't Gram Nash by any chance? lol

Another great job Greg, another great job. If I lived in the U.S. and needed anything repair wise doing you'd be getting it.

These old SG's have such great deep bevels on the body, makes the current production look like Teleplankers.

Wow Lou, I've just been through all the pics on the link in your sig, that's an impressive resurrection on its own !

I can't wait to see more of what Greg did to salvage this piece of history. By the way, were the brass inlays done before or after Duane got rid of it ?

The inlays and refin were after Duane got rid of it. Daune got another one and put a stoptail on it.
