Re: GooCart's 1 Build
Nothing really big has happened this weekend, I've sprayed the first clear layers, I got a little over enthusiastic and gave it a full spray, so now the pores are filled. I've redone the headstock, masking the logo and spraying the black nitro. Now I just wait for the dye from Tom to show up so I can finish it.
The bass player in GooCarts have just bought a new bass, a Dan Armstrong Plexi. They are pretty cool this things. He also surprised me with a bunch of custom made picks with the GooCarts logo ![]() ![]()

Dear Magnus,
respect! - You've done some great work here. Particularly, the top looks awsome. What angle did you lean back the neck? I'm just about to start building my own '59 LP and need to gather some data... Luckily, I have access to a CNC but I'm not familiar with creating the required 3D models. - I guess your CNC models are not available, right? ![]() BTW, at the beginnin of the thread, you mentioned combining measures of a '53 and '59 LP. Where do you get the data from? - I assume, you don't have that many old LPs available for taking the measures... rock on, schoeftinger, austria |

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
Hi schoeftinger, you're right, the 3d file isn't available, but you could always check out the site in my signature.
The neck angle is at 4,4 degree and the pickup plane is 1,21 degree. It seem to bee pretty good angle, I can get a little more than two thumb wheels under the TOM. I do actually have a couple of 'bursts, some 50's Custom and a '53 GT pretty close, I'm a old friend of a guitar collecting twin couple from my home town and my brother-in-law owns the GT, but most of the measurements come from this site, shared by some very talented and friendly guys. Good luck with the build and don't hesitate to ask for any kind of info. |

This thread has gotten me so much more excited to eventually get building myself! Can't wait to see how your axe turns out man.

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
The Canadian mixed dye kit has arrived!!!
Now I'm just waiting for some final instructions from Tom and then I'm ready for the color. If enerything goes as planned I'll have some photos to upload later today or tomorrow. If it doesn't.....well, I'd say that the guitar would get a first class flight ticket to Canada. But we're not there yet. I still live on the hope that I'll make it. |

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
After everything I've seen on this thread, I seriously doubt there will be any issues. I can't wait to check back tonight and see what you came up with!

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
OK, so now I've done my first "bursting".
It wasn't as hard as I thought, the dye Tom sent to me was super easy to work with. I haven't got any work in progress photos, I was to caught up with the spraying to bother about the camera. Everything went really fine, the coloring and the sunburst, but I my stupid as used the wrong spray gun for the clear, it worked great for the color but I had a lot of "spray dust" problem. So I changed gun and the problem was solved. For the actual bursting I had a plan for a full, rich burst, but after spraying the yellow and some brown I came to the conclusion to go for a honey burst instead. I just couldn't spray any more color over it. It's really beautiful in person. The light was off in the spray both when I shot the photos, it's not quite as dark in person. So here are some photos. You can see some spray dust in the highlight but I doubt that it will be a problem sanding it down. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now comes the hardest part of the build for me.... letting it cure before I start the sanding and buffing. I'm really, really anxious to start the final sanding but I'll have to steel my self and just leave it. |

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
Den där ser ju så otroligt läcker ut, och jag tror du gjorde rätt i att inte dra på mer färg. Hoppas få se den live vid nåt tillfälle!

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
Thanks for the kind words, the finish wasn't planned. It just happened before my very eyes. I was aiming for a full blown rich burst but ended up with this HoneyBoney.
Duff, I'm sure there are some real luthiers out here who can give you a proper step by step tutorial. I'm such a newbie on this, I'm just glad I made it. But I can tell you how I where told to do it. First, sand the body, not to fine paper, I used 400 dry paper. Then the grain filler. I used a filler Tom sent to me. I think it's a oil based filler with aniline dye. It was really easy to work with and it filled the pores of the mahogany pretty much. Time for the first clear nitro layer and then a quick sanding, using the same 400 paper. Finish it of with a rich nitro layer that made the red in the filler pop up. OK, here the really fun start, it's time for the color. Tom sent me the colors i needed, aniline dye mixed with thinner. They came ready to mix with the nitro. First I masked all binding and then I sprayed the red for the mahogany. It was a joy using the dye, I could "build up" the color without any problem. Then I sprayed the yellow for the top and then it was time for the burst. The same thing there, I build up the color of the brown, I tried to look at it in different lightning, in the spray both it looked dull but in light from the workshop it had a different appearance. When I felt I was ready with the burst I removed the masking and scraped the binding. I had left some of the binding unmasked, I didn't want to mask to much. Then it was time for the amber layer. I sprayed it pretty uneven, quite much on the logo as I wanted a really dirty yellow tone on it. When I was ready with the amber I sprayed four clear layers where the last one was pretty thin, like 30/70, nitro/thinner. It wasn't that hard, I've had nightmares about this but I tried to take it nice and slow. I used a really great gun for the color but it proved to be way to small for the clear. I should never have used it, I should have known better. But after changing to the bigger gun I had no problem with the final clear layers. The lightning in the both wasn't the best, I think it would have been better to do it in a real pro both but it's a home made guitar for crying out load!! So that's how I did it. With a lot of help from Tom Bartlet I actually sprayed my first burst and I've never felt better. It wouldn't have been possible without the grain filler or the dye Tom sent to me. Leif at Jacobsson GuitarWorks was very kind and let me borrow the equipment, not to mention the nitro, I owe you some, Leif!!! How about that as an advice, use your good friends to the limits. |

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
It looks great Magnus! I've sprayed a few bursts and ended up doing the same thing. Sometimes I thunk it's better to let the character of the top dictate the look of the finish.

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
I took the guitar to the office and test mounted some parts, I just couldn't help my self.
The nitro is in a desperate need of some sanding and buffing but it's starting too look as a guitar now. I keep telling my self, like a mantra: "don't sand the guitar, let it cure, don't sand the guitar, let it cure". Wish me luck, I'm like a tomahawk missile, I've locked the target and got the finger on the trigger, or in this case, the sand paper. ![]() ![]()

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
I'll shot some photos of the back when I have the guts to turn it around, the nitro is still pretty soft.
That's SD antiquity and the rings are from RetroSpec. |

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
Just a question, is it safe to lay it down like that? aren't you gonna ruin the back if the nitro hasn't cured yet? I'm asking this because I did that with my first build and I ruined it laying on a soft cloth...
