Re: GooCart's 1 Build
The logo isn't that big deal. As I wrote earlier I had the inlay laser cut and the cavity CNC cut. Before I sprayed the black I covered the logo with a transparent stencil, made of a friend of mine who run a commercial studio. One must remember to spray light, otherwise the edge will be pretty ugly. I did some testing and I think it worked pretty well.
I might ad that the stencil is transparent because otherwise it would be difficult to position it. It's not how you usually does it if you have a MOP logo, but it was the only way I could think of with the celluloid logo. |

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
Today I was lucky. I sad earlier that I should glue the neck today, I was this close of gluing, and then Leif asked, hove about the side dots?
It wouldn't have been fun realizing it to late. I'll make an inventory of my picks and see if I have any tortoise ones laying around. Anyone remember the size for the dots? I don't know if they are the same on '53 and '59. |

![]() I actually did that mistake, or even worse, with my first set neck build. An Explorer 76 replica. I glued the "neck" (adtually a piece of wood) before I even shaped it which I later found out was a pain.... but a challange to get complete. It turned out great in the end when it was finnished. But it was unessessary hard work and I was double satisfied because the huge mistake I did ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
Magnus, this is coming out fantastic! And I'm jealous as heck, seeing how "easy" it is with the CNC machine (understanding how much work you put in up front with the design work). Can't wait to see how this baby turns out!

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
The side dots are there!! I found a old tortoise Greco LP JR pick guard that I used and punched the 2,3 mm dots. It was kind of tricky lining them up, but I'm happy with the result. As always it's really nice having a real vintage LP to compare with, the dots aren't 100% in line on that one.
After work I'll glue the neck, we're getting closer!!! |

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
The best for the guitar would off course be to send it to Tom but I really want to do it my self, it's really scary since I've never done it before but I have Tom as my mentor.

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
Yeah right!! Well, I'll try to do my very best at least.
There where no neck gluing today. Leif had warmed the hide glue to much so we'll go for another try tomorrow. I'll bring the camera and shot some new photos. |

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
I've got some photos to show you,
First I thought I'd show how I did the dots, no big deal. A old pickguard and a punch. The dots are a just hair bigger than 2,3 mm. I dialed up the wrong size for the ones on the photo, they are almost 3 mm so it was just to start pressing again. I could feel it in my hand the day after. ![]() And here we're gluing the neck. On the photo you see the dots, for the holes I used a 2.3 mm drill bit which I rotated with my hand. ![]() Instant rock star!!! This is Leif by the way. Without him or Tom Bartlett non of this would have been possible. ![]() Now I'm waiting on some parts from RS GuitarWorks so I can string it up and do some fret preparation and the nut. I want to roll the neck binding before I start with the finish. Last edited by GooCart; 10-14-2009 at 03:10 AM. |

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
I have a question,
I'm about to drill for the jack and the jack plate on the Les Pauls I have at home are all over the place. It's supposed to be centered in the mahogany height, not in the total height or am I wrong? LG, you're welcome, just glad bring some ideas. |

![]() ![]() As you can see, even those two locations on mine, vary by a few mm's, Just as you said with yours. I would try and centre the plate, or hole, on the mahogany, not the entire width of the guitars edge including binding. |

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
I opened up the old Gold Top and found that it was centered in the mahogany so I put it there. I think there are enough clearance so i can position the jack plate exactly as I want it, according to the photos you posted.

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
I'll check it out later tonight, I have a feeling that it's a bit bigger, maybe 24 mm.
Me and inches,,it's just to complicated with all those fractions

Re: GooCart's 1 Build
I got some stuff from RS GuitarWorks earlier today. It took me about 10 seconds to test mount it. I'm still waiting on the English rings and the pick guard from Retrospec, but other than that I have just about all the parts I need to complete the build.
Here are some photos. ![]() I'm not sure about this. I think it's over aged, you can't even read the script. It looks vintage alright, but maybe a little to much. We'll see if I'll use it in the end. ![]() ![]() Left over tuners from my R8. I've aged them with hydrochloric acid. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My plan was to mount the Tune-o-matic and the tailpiece this weekend but my man Leif is gone all weekend and I don't have the guts to do it without him supervising me so I just go around and look at it. It's not that boring after all. |
