LP DC JR Project Started.

I had some left over White Limba aka Korina so I decided to build a LP DC Jr.

I was able to get a nice 1/4 sawn piece from one end of the board for the neck but the board wasn't thick enough so i had to add a piece . The "Scarf" joint runs between the first and second set of tuner holes so it should be ok.
You can faintly see the joint on the neck blank pic.

Body blank glued up.

After the blank was rough cut I used my old tried and true method of milling the tenon end of the neck to the 3 degree angle.

I have to admit, I was blown away by Icegator8's TR slot cutting jig so I contacted him and after a few email exchanges I got the info I needed and built my own Slot Cutting Jig.

Slot cut , perfectly in the center.

Nut pocket cut using chisels and a small drum sander on a Dremel

Re: LP DC JR Project Started.

TR ready to installed and glued up.

Filler strip planed flush and partial shape of headstock bandsawed out.

Body shape being rough cut.

Body edge rounded over and sanded.

Thats what I got done so far in 2 days. I'm out of 1/4" dot inlays so i'll order some on Monday. Once thay get here I'll be able to continue on the fingerboard and once the FB is finished being inlayed I can continue on with the rest of thee assembly.

I think i'm going old school, 1 Dogear ,etc,etc.
Not sure about color as of yet. That Korina is GORGEOUS so I don't want to cover it up if I don't have too.

ANY SUGGESTIONS ON THE COLOR

I was having a look on jacksonsrareguitars.com.au
and under Hamer there was a korina DC JR in natural korina.
I thought it looked a little pasty.Maybe with a tinted clear.

Re: LP DC JR Project Started.

make it natural with a little yellow mixed with clear, like PRS does on their korina models, then paint a black stinger on the back to cover the joint.

Re: LP DC JR Project Updated !

During my days off from work ( Being I work 12 hr shifts every month I get 7 day off in a row ) I managed to get some more work done on the Jr.

Headstock shaped and Veener glued up and shaped:

I used my Laser to make sure the neck was aligned perfectly with the body and set up the guides to route the neck mortise:

Added vinyl tape to the sides of the guides to make the pocket a hair smaller and than I can fine tune the joint so I get a snug fit of the neck tennon

A perfect fit after a little tweeking :

Re: LP DC JR Project Started.

Time for some routing and drilling of the pickup cavity, control cavity and jack hole:

Holes drilled out in the headstock:

Some other shots:

So thats it for now. Tomorrow will be a busy day as I gotta prep my copy of Old Boy and later pay a visit to see Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler.
I'l l be driving up to Wallingford CT to see Heaven & Hell from Back Stage !
I got a call from Iommi's guitar tech and he told me to come up and that I'm already on the Guest List !
I CAN'T WAIT !

Re: LP DC JR Project Started.

What were the two depths for the pickup cavity and the router bit(s) you used? How did you locate the jackplate hole (on the same centerline as hole to the pickup cavity? And the body roundover is 1/8" radius?

Sorry for all the ?'s but this is just too cool. How does Korina look with a cherry finish?

Sharkey,
I had only pictures to go off of so I guess-timated on the jack hole.
Not very accurate I know but what the hell.
I did however get VERY LUCKY as you can see by where the drill bit exited into the pickup cavity. I PRAYED that the bit wouldn't wonder and come through the top !

I got a pdf file of a dogear route from another topic here and used that to make the first routes template. The router bit was a 3/8th
I do believe the first depth was 3/4" and than i routed the remainder at half of that.
Yes I used a 1/8th roundover bit.

I'd like to get that started on that build but the all important neck blank is eluding me.
I just can't seem to find to right one and being a tightwad I don't want to pay over a $100 for a blank............so we keep looking !

Thanks for the info. The drill hole to the pickup cavity couldn't be better. I may have drawn that route for the dogear. Just didn't know if you found a good source for the depth.
