Re: Ex-Nihilo Build 3 -SGLP
I began the carve by making some carve templates.
![]() After routing, I did some sanding and achieved this: ![]() ![]() ![]() Next, I will need to route the neck and pickup angles; and then, binding. Sincerely, Scott |

Re: Ex-Nihilo Build 3 -SGLP
Great looking templates Scott. From the looks of it you used two different diameter router bits and took off a couple of mm per template pass to rough out the carve. Am I close?
That carve does closely resemble the LP curve. Nice job! |

I am pretty happy with the carve. I think on subsequent models I will make the back end wider (so the slope is more pronounced). It was a bit of an experiment to match the LP carve onto the SG body. A bit of tweaking is still needed. Also, I need to sand some more recurve in places. But all in all, I am pretty pleased. It is very cool looking (at least I think so). It should be an awesome guitar when it's done. Sincerely... |

Re: Ex-Nihilo Build 3 -SGLP
After sanding the carve to where I liked it, I taped up the body to prepare it for the spray bomb. Black paint will indicate if there are any irregularities in a carve.
![]() Here it is spray bombed. The carve looked really even, so I just had to sand off the black. ![]() Almost done! ![]() With the carve finished, I routed the neck angle plane. I made a new jig which is very accurate and easier to use than the hinge cage. However, as you will see, I still use the hinge jig to rout the pickup plane. ![]() Here is a shot half way through routing the neck angle plane. ![]() And the finished neck angle plane. ![]() Then, I put the body in the hinge cage and routed the pickup plane. You can see that the pickup plane is the angle that exist between the end of the fret board and the bridge. ![]() Perhaps on Monday I will be able to route and apply the binding and route the neck mortise. Sincerely, Scott |

It makes me wish I had your abilities. That guitar is going to be a knockout, I just know it. - D

Re: Ex-Nihilo Build 3 -SGLP
Great thread as usual Scott, your documentary skills are as good as your building skills.
Going back to the beginning on this thread you show and talk about the maple bookmatched top. Can you tell me how you get the joined edges perfectly parallel for gluing? I don't have a jointer or shaper but have a router and working on getting a table for the router. My plan is to use a split fence on a table router to make my edges nice and straight for gluing. Just curious, I'm sure you're doing it yourself but didn't find it in the build thread. |

I really dig your neck angle jig. Great build and I am enjoying watching the process.
