Re: "camille" small build

Some more headway tonight.

Frets sanded flush and board final thicknessed.......

Binding ala acetone/binding glue..........

Headstock shape cut out and holly glued to it............oh, the piece of rosewood clamped to the neck is to but the holly up to...... I'm sure was easy to figure out though.............

That mop at the 19th fret sucks man. I wish it would have shown up before I glued it in. Has this ever happened to anybody before?

Re: "camille" small build

Looks awesome.

I don't think anyone will notice the inlay once the strings are on and it's all done up.

I thought the duck was going to be in the middle like the crown on the SG and Camille at the top. Looks good like this though.

Thanks,

I originally was going to do it that way but when I layed it out in signlab
I had to leave the headstock full size. To me the headstock looked too long
with the shorter scale and smaller body. It seemed pretty cool to do her full name ( she goes by Cami ) "Camille" like the les paul sig and have the "Wells" in place of the word "Model". It would have been nice maybe to have something a little longer to go on top of the headstock to take up the space like the name Gibson did but I just couldn't stretch the beak any further

Re: "camille" small build

Walley, I love how the headstock mockup looks! And I think Cami will flip over it! And with regard to the inlay, I'd do what's already been suggested as far as letting it ride for now, stringing it up, and seeing how it looks. You can always change it out later. Just think of all the people who buy after market inlays and change out full sets themselves...and most of these people don't even have any guitar building experience; so for you, it should be a piece of cake if you decide to do it.

Thank Frank, Your opinion means a lot to me in this build, Yours inspired me to do this one.

I planned on going ahead and letting it ride, and looking into it later. If I didn't have a crunch time I think I would switch it out now. I know that my track record for getting back to something like this in the future isn't very good

Wow, everything is look great! I love these threads. Monsterwalley your daughter is unknowingly well on her way to a very unique and fine instrument. Outstanding job, can't wait to see it completed. I like the headstock the way it is also, are you doing anything special with the truss rod cover?

Thanks! I appreciate it. Still rough around the gills but I'm learnin.

As far as the t.r. cover. I'll use the regular one. I think the headstock treatment is enough. I don't want to over do it, + she'll have a custom strap tied into the theme. If that's too much or too gawdy then she can throw it away if she wants.......

(the strap that is)

Re: "camille" small build

I have more progress shots. Some steps are missing since my camera wasn't charged. I had to keep proceeding because of the looming deadline.

I used a bit stuck in backwards to hog out the binding. I originally started with masking tape on the end to protect the finger board but it kept getting gooey and leaving residue. I took it off and everything was fine,

sorry for the blurry shot.....

I then grabbed the neck and sanded it close to the fingerboard, Then them together.

I should have used more clamps, but that's all I had on hand. I had even squeeze out all the way around so I'm sure it's ok. In the future i will use another radius block and more clamps though.

Unfortunately the pics I'm missing are the neck shaping. I used the spindle sander to do the bulk of it then finished up with sandpaper backed with duct tape. I went a little thinner (copied it off my 05 sg) since Cami's fingers fit it pretty well.

Then had a guiness draft and stared at it for a while

Re: "camille" small build

Then drilled the tuner holes but did it at work on the drill press and had no camera.

Then to install the ducky
It went pretty well. Worked good machining out the grooves to fill with black filler. Saved tons of time.

All in all I'm pleased with how it's turning out so far. I think the duck looks pretty cool too.

Uknown Hinson. Incredible guitar player. Got back at 3:00 this morning and I'm not used to that anymore so it's slow starting today

This guitar is looking really nice!! I'm even more impressed by you guys now when I've started my own build. It's so clean and precise. I particularly like the clean lines you've got in the neck/headstock transition.
Good job!!

Good job!!

Thanks very much

As far as being precise, I'll leave that to the other guys here. My picture's just hide a lot

It's funny you say that about the neck to headstock transition. I really struggled with that part on my first build and this build.

I have a lot to learn........

I'm excited to follow your build

I'm over here in Manhattan, Just west of you about 2 hours.

I've never been to knuckleheads before sat night. Had an absolute blast too.
I love Unknown Hinson, I had been following him on youtube for a while and was happy to finally get to see him live.

Where you there sat night? What band are you in? I'll have to come check you out.

Walley, I'm really lovin' how those Babybuckers look in there. I'll be ordering a set or two of those myself this week for my next build or two. Keep it up...Cami's gonna love it!

Yes, I agree Frank, I can't imagine any other pup in there. And you get the credit for turning me on to those puppies (pun intended)
I also promised you that I would show the process I used for routing the pups and I will. (how ever unorthodox it is) I just have been slammed trying to get it done, and my wife is behind the eight ball on her online classes. I'll get more pics posted as soon as I can.

Re: "camille" small build

Just had an Idea that would make my life a little easier...........

I know the Les Paul logo is silk screened onto the headstock to be authentic
Since this is a build of another feather ,so to speak, is there anything wrong with me cutting the "Camille" that I'm putting on the headstock out of vinyl (I have a cutting plotter) and putting it on before the clear. I would apply the clear thick enough to allow for sanding smooth. I've done it before on automotive applications.

Just wondering..............
