How hard can it be

I have a LP copy it sounds and plays great. However I want a quilt top or a flame top. I have the time at night and can get the lumber and if i screw the pooch not much is wasted. So I ask how hard is it. Any threads on how to or a play by play on some one doing it. Oh yeah yes it is a mahogany body, 2 piece.

Thanks in advance

Now that might be in jest, but really is the way I would go.
All of the information on how to do it, which ever way you decide to go, is all here in the luthiers corner.
If you have a guitar that you really like, why take a chance on screwing it up?
Use it as a prototype and clone it. Then you get to have 2 guitars that you really like.

Re: How hard can it be

I wouldn't clone it exactly, I would make it better! Use a 1 piece body, a long neck tenon (if it doesn't have it), try to find some Brazilian Rosewood for the fingerboard, etc. It is possible to end up with a guitar better than any manufacturer is currently producing! Good Luck!

(btw, depending on what glue the top is glued on with, it may be more trouble than its worth to try and change it, so I would build a new one. Build your dream guitar!)

Re: How hard can it be

You take off the top with a router. It is too big an area of solid wood to come off with heat. Build a separate guitar. I wouldn't spend for Brazilian unless you are doing a replica that requires it. It is pretty but it does not contribute to the tone of the guitar.Ole'Lefty

That photo series is really impressive. I would like to save it to my C drive-just that post-not the whole thread. I had not included a $4500 wide belt sander into the equation.Ole'Lefty
