Luthier's -All Time Best Performance
I know luthiers who barely play and quite a few who play a bit more but that is not their calling.
I would like to hear from the luthiers here( anyone who has built or is building)- What song sends you to Nirvana where You wish you could say , " I built that guitar." or "I wish I had built that guitar." Or, "If that guy was playing one of my guitars, it would be even better." In Lew's thread I talked a bit about my level of playing and a realistic vision of what would be the best I could attain. (Some are born to play; some are born to build. I'm afraid I was born to be Master of neither.) The thought came to me as I listened to Kooper-Bloomfield. There is that one performance that makes us stop, at least for a moment to appreciate that music- even if we don't totally quit what we are doing- it may even get us focused more. Someone might listen to your favorite and be more inspired than ever before and adopt it. So, please take a moment to think about it and share with us. ME--" EC playing at the SRV Tribute-" Ain't Gone and Give Up on Love" Thanks, Ol'e Lefty |

Re: Luthier's -All Time Best Performance
I was definitely born to build - I've got the perfect face for radio too!
![]() This does it for me every time I don't care whether you're a fan or not, or if you prefer the original. That is quality tone and playing right there. |

Re: Luthier's -All Time Best Performance
This is tough Lefty. There's a whole lot of music out there that has a big influence on me. A few off the top of my head that have always stuck with me:
Clapton's work on the Beatles "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" or Derek and the Dominos "Layla" or on his own "It's in the way that you use it" Jerry Cantrell's solo on "Sea of Sorrow" (one my favorite solos ever!) Page's solo on "When the Levee Breaks" Oh and the guitars on Skynyrds' "Tuesday's Gone" And a whole lot of stuff from Zakk...

Re: Luthier's -All Time Best Performance
It's funny, but the older I get, the more I like. And I truly believe that context is everything: no point dusting of your Yngwie Malmsteen licks if the country band you're auditioning with is looking for the next Albert Lee.
But around 1973 I went around to a friend's house who had an older brother and this older brother was playing the second side of LZII and when I heard Page's unaccompanied solo in Heartbreaker, that was that: I had to play the guitar. And when I saw LZ at Earl's Court in May 1975 (the first gig ever in the UK to feature back projection screens to magnify the band, so I saw Page's guitar for the first time) I just had to have that guitar, which is why, almost 35 years later, I hang around here! I saw Colosseum II in about 1977 and spent the gig lusting after Gary Moore's guitar - can't remember a note he played but the look of that guitar burned itself into my consciousness and I've never managed to remove it. So in those days, I used to play blues-based rock on my big clunky 1975 LP Standard until, in June 1978, I heard the first Van Halen album and stopped playing for a year. After that, I found a guitar teacher learned theory and harmony and now I play anything that takes my fancy. But even though I can play some fairly sophisticated stuff, that primordial thrill of a LP through a Marshall is like the musical equivalent of Proust chomping his way through a whole truck-load of madeleines!

Re: Luthier's -All Time Best Performance
I'm an aspiring luthier, so I hope I qualify for this.
![]() I have to agree with so many of the choices already spelled out here, but for me, I think it has to be Stevie Ray Vaughan's 'Lenny'. There is just so much soul, and love, and passion written in there. And then there is Randy Rhoads' 'Dee', a song which really hits home because he wrote it in honor of his Mom. Yeah, I'm a momma's boy sometimes. So what? ![]() And Gary Moore's "Still Got the Blues for You". Geebus, that's an awesome one. And, of course, the Scorpions song, "Still Loving You". That's just a SMALL sampling from my brain. So many more songs just grab me.

Re: Luthier's -All Time Best Performance
Hmmm, a toughie for sure, while I was raised on Skynard, Allman Bros, all things southern when I picked up the guitar my original hero was Elvis, the old Elvis got me into music.
After the southern stint I got into the metal craze, but my all time favorite guitarist if I would have to name one is David Gilmore, The man plays with such feeling and soul, he never played anything fast or technical, but every note he plays counts. I went through my wingie malmsteen stage, learned what I needed and moved on, I appreciate the skill it takes for anyone to play that way, back in the day I was pretty quick, just didn't want to learn every wierd scale in the book and practice 28 hours a day. And if I don't mention Zakk I'll be thrown out of the Z.W. fan club! but he is a great guitarist! Great Idea for a topic Mike!

I'm a Bama boy, grew up on the standard classic rock, and ESPECIALLY Elvis. Grandpa was a huge fan. Ditto on the Gilmour. And double on the Zakk. Especially his rendition of 'America the Beautiful' form 1919 Eternal. That one made me cry. As did 'Just Killing Time'...and a couple others. I'm an emotional musician, okay?

You guys need to get out of my head. Everything I thought to mentioned just was. I like it here. I will add the Gilmour's tone on "Coming back to life" is one that always gives me goosebumps.

Re: Luthier's -All Time Best Performance
Ah cool Angel! bama boy, a fellow who works for me is from bama, forget about it when bamas playing, he goes crazy!
And man, I forgot about Shenker!, We used to play "Armed and ready" I loved that song, for a German he sure had alot of blues influence! And of course EVH who could forget him, all the old stuff pre 1984 albums. Anybody remember "carefull with that axe Eugene" from Floyds UmaGuma?? (sp?) a very strange song, strange album.

There are so many that come to mind, but for some reason, the first one that did was this one:

Re: Luthier's -All Time Best Performance
I wouldn't call my self a luthier, but I want to play also.
Everytime I hear this guy play I start to laugh and cry at the same time, RIP Jeff Healey. |

Good one Red--- A La Recherce au Temps Perdu- (my spelling might be a bit off there) I have Proustian moments constantly- more with age; and they are more precious with age.
