Great tip Roman, I think I remember reading that back in the day gibson would actually spritz the headstock logo with clear lacquer then use that to tack the second logo.

Re: My '59 Les Paul Replica

I spent just under $2200.00 - that's parts and shop time. I paid for the use of the spray booth where I did my finish work and for the time my friend took away from his other work to carve my top.

I can give you a detailed breakdown. I don't have it with me here at work, and I have to check the forum rules to see if I can discuss prices.

Re: My '59 Les Paul Replica

Here are some new pics.

Here's the back of the headstock. I aged the tuners with muriatic acid and rock salt fumes.

A close up of the back.

Pigtail bridge and tailpiece.

I was reading a thread on another forum and they were ripping Pigtail Products. All I can say and you can quote me, great parts, quick service, and Steve is a nice guy!

Next to my R8.

In the case.

Re: My '59 Les Paul Replica

I noticed in a couple of pics you have an old Legend amp. I had one it was pretty cool.

I bet you have had that since it was new.

Yes, bought it brand new. My first really good amp. I had a Heathkit TA-16 until I got that. I wish now that I still had the Heathkit, not because it was a great amp but because I built it.

The Legend is a nice amp with that tube/transistor mix and the Celestion 12 inch speaker.

The biggest difference is the R8 is brighter. My replica is a little darker. That could also be the caps. I have .047 vintage caps in my replica and the R8 has the .022. Seymour Duncan Antiquities in the replica versus Classic '57s.

They feel very similar and I don't have to change any amp settings when I switch from one to the other.

WOW I think I had the same amp. I built it when I was in the service. You are talking about the heathkit that was like a solid state twin right?

Yes, with the green on light and two 12 inch Jensen speakers. It moved to New Orleans with the buyer who sold it. I wish I still had it.

Re: My '59 Les Paul Replica

There's not much left to photograph.

Here's the control cavity; CTS pots, vintage .047 caps with vintage yellow sleeving ( a gift ), period correct pull back wire, etc.

The jack plate. I made it from Stew-Mac creme plastic. I traced a Historic jack plate and shaped it using a horizontal sanding wheel on a bench belt sander. I did the control cavity covers the same way.

As you might imagine, making the switch cavity cover plate round was not easy.

Re: My '59 Les Paul Replica

hey Brother, what tools did you use for the project? did you use plans? if so where did you get them? or did you use your R8 as a reference? how did you find the correct angle for the pick up cavities? where did you find the holly veneer?

Re: My '59 Les Paul Replica

I used a pin router to do the fret board, a rasp and sanding blocks to shape the neck, a band saw to cut the body and head stock, trim the fret board, sanding blocks to smooth sides of the body, a router for the cable channel. I used a jig to line up the proper angle for the pickup routing that was basically a board with a smaller board at a 90 degree angle and then positioned the body to get it right. If I could draw in this box I could show you.
I made the holly veneer, cutting a holly plank with the band say and then using a rotating drum sander to plane it to thickness. I got my holly from Keim Lumber in Charm, Ohio.

Re: My '59 Les Paul Replica

I traced my 1990 '59 Flametop Reissue for the body dimensions and then compared it to my R8. (I just couldn't bring myself to drag a pencil around that guitar.) I used my R8 as a guide for the neck.
I tried to show the tools in the pictures because after they split the top, the shop teachers at my school asked me for updates. I made them a PowerPoint to bore their construction tech class with.
It was late when I answered your first question so IF I left anything out I apologize. My dad left me a ton of tools and specialized drill bits and the like when he died. He used to buy things and never use them so I've tried to put them to good use. I don't even know the names of some of the things. For example, there is a set of bits that look like a oversized car valve with a sharp lip. He had the size for the jack plate whole, the switch plate whole, etc.
What I didn't have I either borrowed or rented.

Re: My '59 Les Paul Replica

This was posted by some of my students, and shows the guitar in a different setting than my house.
I have been at my school for twenty-one years and every year I round up a bunch of students to play in the school talent show. As this is my last year and as this video indicates, I brought back former students to play with me for the last time.
It's long but you might enjoy it. We did White Room because it was the song I played in my first talent show and Crossroads because I always wanted to do it on that stage. My goal, as always, was to give the kids a chance to shine but this year, I did take the 'last' solo.
If this is in the wrong place, let me know.

I feel so humble!

I can't imagine possessing the skill and patience that you have.

Your family, colleagues and students must be so proud of you. The beauty of your Les Paul replica is a reflection of your gentle spirit.

I am almost at a loss as to what to type; reading your post has been an emotional journey!

Thank you.
